Summary

Minimum Starting Salary: $24 per hour Depending on Qualifications

This position is on the Aquatics team.

The City of Waco seeks a passionate and experienced animal care professional ready to take on a leadership role. We are seeking an ambitious aquatics professional familiar with modern husbandry practices, collection planning, and conservation experience. Our ideal candidate is SCUBA certified, knowledgeable about Life Support Systems (LSS) and Ozone filtration. Our zoo is under new leadership, and we look forward to a bright future! Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Zoology, Biological Sciences, or related field
  • Two (2) years of professional animal care experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with maintenance and operation of life support systems on both small and large systems
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Husbandry experience with marine and freshwater species, reptiles, and elasmobranchs
  • SCUBA Certification at Instructor level preferred
  • Technical skills training and state/federal certifications (upon hire)

Position Overview

Under supervision, manages the health and welfare of exotic and native animals, supervises Zookeepers, and oversees daily care, husbandry, and nutrition.

Essential Functions

  • Manage daily care, husbandry, and nutrition; resolve issues within scope
  • Inspect and maintain exhibits to ensure animal health and regulatory compliance
  • Supervise staff; assign tasks; conduct evaluations; develop skills
  • Perform daily rounds; evaluate animal health; ensure USDA and AZA standards
  • Work with Veterinarian on health care plans
  • Manage food and supplements
  • Discuss animal health with Zookeepers; maintain records
  • Monitor exhibit facilities and grounds
  • Assist with exhibit renovations and expansion plans
  • Manage inventory of equipment and supplies
  • Participate in public education and outreach
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed

Education and experience assessment:

  • Relevant associate degree + 2 years of animal care
  • Six years of animal care with high school diploma/GED
  • Bachelor's or master's degree with animal care knowledge
  • I do not meet minimum requirements
