Job description

Agent in Training
Farmers Insurance | Grand Rapids, MI
Turn Your People Skills Into a Career

Looking for a career where you can earn more as you grow, develop valuable sales skills, and have opportunities to advance?

Farmers Insurance agencies throughout the Grand Rapids area are looking for motivated individuals to begin a career in insurance as an Agent in Training.

You don't need previous insurance experience to be considered. We're interested in people who are confident communicating with others, willing to learn, and ready to put in the effort to build a successful career.

If you've worked in sales, retail, restaurants, hospitality, banking, leasing, automotive, healthcare, customer service, or another people-focused role, your experience may translate better to insurance than you think.

What You’ll Do

As an Agent in Training, you'll learn the insurance business while gaining hands-on sales experience. Depending on the agency, your day may include:

  • Connecting with prospective customers through leads, referrals, and outreach

  • Asking questions to understand each customer's needs

  • Preparing quotes and explaining available coverage options

  • Helping customers with Auto, Home, Life, Business, and other insurance products

  • Following up with prospective customers throughout the sales process

  • Building long-term relationships with new and existing clients

  • Working toward individual and team sales goals

  • Managing leads and follow-up activity through agency systems

  • Participating in ongoing sales, product, and professional development training

You Could Be a Great Fit If You
  • Enjoy talking with people and building relationships

  • Are comfortable communicating over the phone

  • Like having goals to work toward

  • Are motivated by performance and earning potential

  • Can stay persistent when you hear "no"

  • Take feedback well and want to continue improving

  • Are dependable, organized, and willing to take initiative

  • Want a career with opportunities to grow beyond your starting position

Previous insurance experience is not required.

Experience in sales, customer service, retail, hospitality, restaurants, banking, leasing, automotive, healthcare, or another customer-facing environment is a plus.

Licensing and Training

Because you'll be selling insurance, you'll need to obtain the appropriate insurance licensing. If you're not currently licensed, that's okay.

Qualified candidates can receive access to pre-licensing resources to help prepare for the state exam, along with continued training and coaching as they develop in the role.

What You Can Expect

Opportunities and compensation vary by individual agency, but positions may include:

  • Competitive base pay

  • Uncapped commission potential

  • Performance bonuses and incentives

  • Training and ongoing coaching

  • Professional development opportunities

  • Paid time off and holidays

  • Support from experienced insurance professionals

  • Opportunities for increased responsibility and leadership

  • Potential pathway toward Farmers agency ownership

Where Can This Career Take You?

An Agent in Training position can be the beginning of several different career paths.

Some individuals build successful long-term careers in insurance sales. Others move into leadership or specialize in areas such as Life or Business Insurance. For those with entrepreneurial goals, Farmers also offers a development path for qualified individuals interested in potentially owning and operating their own Farmers Insurance agency in the future.

You don't need to know exactly where you want your career to take you on day one. You just need to be willing to learn, work toward your goals, and see how far you can go.

If you're ready to explore a career with strong earning potential, professional development, and room to grow, apply today to be considered for opportunities with Farmers Insurance agencies throughout the Grand Rapids area.
