Job summary

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor (Site Lead) to oversee after-school child care programs for ages 5-12. You will manage daily operations, support staff, and coordinate with families and community partners to deliver high-quality programming that supports positive outcomes for children.

Under the Youth Development Director, you will ensure curriculum implementation, staff development, safety compliance, and effective communication with guardians.

Qualifications

• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
• Meet the minimum qualifications for “Director-designee” as defined by VA DOE.
• CPR/First Aid certifications within 30 days of hire.
• Medication Authorization Training (MAT) within 60 days of hire.
• Completes all pre-employment requirements including background checks.
• Adequate speaking, hearing and writing skills for interacting with children.

Responsibilities

• Lead the director’s responsibilities in the director’s absence.
• Support implementation and evaluation of developmentally appropriate curriculum and activities.
• Supervise staff, mentor team members, and support professional development.
• Ensure licensing regulations, standards, and YMCA policies are followed.
• Engage families and guardians, fostering a welcoming environment.
• Collaborate with local schools and community partners to enhance programming.
• Maintain records, enrollment, attendance, and schedules; prepare reports.
