Job summary

Blue Origin is seeking a materials/chemical engineer to lead qualification and development of polymer-based composite parts for aerospace hardware. You will drive process development, qualify new materials, and coordinate with internal and external suppliers to meet design and producibility standards.

The role requires 4+ years in polymer composites, strong aptitude for design for producibility and documentation, and the ability to travel up to 25% of the time.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree or higher in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or relevant field from ABET-accredited school.
  • 4+ years of proven experience with polymer-based composites.
  • Experience with process development and qualification of composite materials, especially laminate/core sandwich structures, for use in aerospace.
  • Experience evaluating and troubleshooting processes and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Drive qualifications to implement new materials, processes, and hardware, including tooling and equipment reviews.
  • Develop test plans and reports for material characterization for design allowables, including mechanical testing, thermal analysis, and chemical analysis.
  • Coordinate test panel build and testing within schedule and budget constraints.
  • Author and update specifications for composite applications.
  • Review documentation to ensure compliance to hardware requirements internally and at external suppliers.
  • Work with multi-functional teams responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce aerospace hardware.
  • Disposition nonconformances, develop repair solutions, and find opportunities for improvements to quality, cost, and schedule.
  • Review and approve engineering drawings for adherence to M&P requirements and best practices and provide technical guidance to ensure producibility of new hardware.
  • Travel to support internal and external suppliers up to 25% of the time.
