Job summary

University of Houston in Houston, TX is seeking an Advising Assistant in the Honors College to support degree planning and student services.

You will assist in advising undergraduate and graduate students, coordinate registration, maintain records, coordinate class schedules, and support new student orientation. Familiarity with PeopleSoft Campus Solutions and FileMaker Pro is preferred; education may offset experience. A security check is required.

Qualifications

  • Must have basic grammar, spelling, punctuation and simple math skills (percentages, ratios).
  • Minimum of one year of directly job-related experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in advising current and prospective students on degree requirements and administrative procedures.
  • Prepares degree plans for students; reviews and revises degree requirement handouts and forms.
  • Corresponds with applicants concerning application procedures, status, financial aid, and prerequisites by phone, letters and e-mail.
  • Participates in student registrations and add/drop sessions.
  • May assist faculty with changes in academic procedures during the term, such as grade changes, petitions, leaves of absence, and addressing student issues.
  • Compiles information on applicants for admissions and assistantships to monitor status.
  • Creates and maintains student and applicant files.
  • May participate in new student orientation and represent the department at university events.

Job description

Department: Honors College Salary: 16.63 - 18.73

Assists in advising and preparing degree plans for undergraduateand/or graduate students, coordinating student registration, maintaining student records, coordinating class schedules, toinclude assignment of classrooms, and, assisting in conducting newstudent orientation.

  • Assists in advising current and prospective students on degreerequirements and administrative procedures.
  • Prepares degree plans for students; reviews and revises academicdegree requirement handouts and forms.
  • Corresponds with applicants concerning application procedures, status, financial aid, and prerequisites by phone, letters ande-mail.
  • Participates in student registrations and drop/addsessions.
  • May assist faculty members with outgoing changes in academicprocedures during the term, such as grade changes, studentpetitions, leave of absences, and general student complaints andproblems.
  • Compiles information in personal computer on applicants foradmissions and assistantships to monitor status and identifydeserving students.
  • Creates and maintains hardcopy files of students andapplicants.
  • May participate in new student orientation and representdepartment at university events, such as Cougar Preview.
  • Prepares revisions of the class schedule and may prepare facultyassignment roster.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Additional Qualifications:

Preferred candidates will have experience or familiarity withPeopleSoft Campus Solutions and FileMaker Pro; the ability tomultitask and work cooperatively with others; keen attention todetail; and proficiency in Microsoft 365 software.

Education will be considered in lieu ofexperience.
