Job summary

The University of Houston System is seeking an academic advisor to support graduate and undergraduate students through admissions, program planning, and retention from enrollment through graduation. The role includes processing graduate admissions and advising on degree plans and petitions.

Job description

Department: ComputerScienceSalary: 43,000 - 48,900

Provides information to and advises both enrolled andprospective students regarding the academic programs offered by theUniversity or a specific department, including requirements foradmission and retention through graduation; may coordinate the workof entry level academic advisors.

  1. 1. Advises enrolled and prospective students regarding academicprograms and curriculums.
  2. 2. Analyzes and processes degree plans, graduation applications,grade change forms, and general petitions.
  3. 3. Maintains student files updated throughout their academiccareers and makes changes to records as necessary.
  4. 4. Analyzes and processes requests for readmission from academicsuspension, as well as financial aid reinstatements; providesretention services for students on probation.
  5. 5. May assist in conducting orientation sessions for groups ofincoming new students.
  6. 6. May assist in recruiting high school and community collegestudents and may make presentations at special events.
  7. 7. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

This position is responsible for advising current andprospective graduate students from admissions and retention throughgraduation. Duties involve, but are not limited to:

  • Processes graduate admissions applications.
  • Advise and refers prospective students and current students inareas concerning admissions, professional development, funding,student services, policies, degree plans, course planning andselections, and career and educational goals.
  • Interprets and communicates academic policies and procedures tofaculty, students and staff.
  • Analyzes, monitors and processes student paperwork such as degreeplans, general petitions, graduation applications, non-residenttuition waivers, and substitutions
  • Maintains admissions and current student files/records throughouttheir academic careers and makes changes as necessary.
  • Coordinates or assists with preparing and conducting studentmeetings such as orientations, seminars and workshops.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred candidates will have experience or familiarity withPeopleSoft Campus Solutions or other ERP system such as EllucianBanner; ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others;demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication skills;strong interpersonal, organizational, problem solving and customerservice skills; keen attention to detail; proficiency in theMicrosoft 365 software.

Education will be considered in lieu ofexperience.

Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practicalaspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; orthe basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline.Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal,directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university oran equivalent in-depth specialized training program that isdirectly related to the type of work being performed. Requires aminimum of (1) year of directly job-related experience.
