Job summary

The Y in Central Maryland is seeking an Advanced Swim Instructor to lead lessons per YMCA standards, ensuring safety and delivering high-quality instruction. You will work with intermediate-to-advanced swimmers, emphasizing stroke technique, endurance, and progression.

Responsibilities include assessing progress, providing feedback, maintaining certifications, and assisting with administrative tasks. Flexible evenings and weekends are required; training and development opportunities are provided

Qualifications

• Prior experience teaching swim lessons required.
• Experience with intermediate or advanced swimmers preferred.
• Swim coaching or competitive swimming experience preferred.
• Current Swim Instructor Certification (e.g., YMCA of the USA, WSI, or equivalent).
• Current certification in CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration (O2 within 30 days of hire).
• Preferred Lifeguard certification.
• Successful completion of the Y in Central Maryland swim test.
• Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends.
• Completion of all required new hire training, including Child Abuse Prevention, prior to first shift.

Responsibilities

• Lead swim lessons using the Y curriculum, adapting instruction to meet the needs and abilities of individual swimmers.
• Provide instruction and coaching to more advanced swimmers, focusing on continued skill development, stroke technique, endurance, and progression.
• Ensure participant safety and enforce pool rules during lessons.
• Assess swimmer progress and provide constructive feedback.
• Provide drills and activities to improve technique and confidence.
• Maintain consistency and quality by following progression standards.
• Maintain up-to-date instructor certifications and current instructional practices.
• Assist with administrative tasks such as recordkeeping and reporting.
• Prepare lesson areas with equipment and return after use.
• Coordinate substitutes when absent and provide lesson plans.
• Promote Y swim programs and support participant retention.
• Foster a clean, inclusive, engaging environment for all swimmers and families.
