Job summary

The Y in Central Maryland is hiring a Swim Instructor 1 to teach lessons per YMCA guidelines, ensure safety, and create an engaging environment for all swimmers. This role supports the organization’s mission of well-being for individuals and communities.

You will assess swimmer progression, prepare lesson areas, and promote YMCA programs while upholding the Y values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Evening/weekend availability is preferred.

Qualifications

• Prior swim instruction experience preferred.
• Current CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration (O2 within 30 days of hire).
• Lifeguard certification preferred.
• Successful completion of the Y in Central Maryland swim test.
• Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends.
• Complete required new hire training, including Child Abuse Prevention, before start date.

Responsibilities

• Teach swim lessons based on YMCA curriculum and adapt instruction to meet individual and group needs.
• Ensure the safety of all participants by enforcing pool rules and supervising during lessons.
• Accurately assess swimmer abilities and provide progression through swim levels.
• Prepare and set up lesson areas with required equipment and return items to storage after use.
• Maintain consistent attendance for scheduled classes; arrange a substitute if unable to attend and provide lesson plans.
• Engage with participants and families to promote YMCA swim programs.
• Support a clean, safe, and inclusive environment while upholding the Y values.
