Job description

UVA Health is seeking a PA or NP to join its Medical ICU advanced practice provider (APP) team.

The APP hired for this position will join a collaborative team of APPs, physicians, and specialists managing a population of critical care medicine patients at the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA, within UVA School of Medicine's Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine and UVA Health's Center for Advanced Practice.

Following onboarding, newly hired MICU APPs will build toward managing 4-6 ICU patients with a broad spectrum of diseases, in a practice model emphasizing autonomy with support from physician colleagues. UVA fosters a rich culture of continual education and professional development, welcoming engaged learners.

Success as a MICU APP requires:

  1. Daily interdisciplinary rounding (including patient presentations) on assigned patient list.
  2. Independently formulating evidence-based care plans for critically ill patients.
  3. Responding to ICU consultations from the emergency department and acute care floors to assess patient acuity, perform triage, and develop initial care plans.
  4. Training and competency in bedside procedures such as central & arterial line insertion, paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture.
  5. Functioning as a team leader during high-stress situations.
  6. Communicating plans of care effectively with patients, families, and team members, navigating complex psychosocial dynamics.
  7. Leading goals of care discussions and helping patients and families process end-of-life issues.
  8. Identifying and consulting sub-specialists as needed.
  9. Performing and documenting history & physical exams, analyzing clinical data for differential diagnoses and care plans.
  10. Prescribing therapies, monitoring patient responses, and adjusting care plans accordingly.
  11. Collaborating within a multidisciplinary team.
  12. Billing for critical and non-critical care services.
  13. Engaging in self-motivated learning, process improvement, and quality initiatives.

Additional information includes rotating shifts of days and nights, weekends, and holidays, with shifts in 12-hour segments to total a 40-hour work week. Major holidays are staffed on a rotating schedule. Please submit a cover letter with your application.

Qualifications include:

  • Acute Care certification (preferred for NP).
  • Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master's degree.
  • Virginia licensure or eligibility as an Advanced Practice Provider.
  • Current BLS, PALS/NRP (as required), ACLS (as required).

Physical demands include prolonged standing, bending, reaching, repetitive motions, and lifting/pushing/pulling 50-100 lbs. Exposure to noise, radiation, infectious materials, etc., may occur.
