Qualifications

Job description

UVA Health is seeking a PA or NP to join its Medical ICU advanced practice provider (APP) team.

The APP hired for this position will join a collaborative team of APPs, physicians, and specialists managing critically ill patients at UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA, within UVA School of Medicine’s Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine and UVA Health’s Center for Advanced Practice.

Following onboarding, MICU APPs will manage 4-6 ICU patients with a broad spectrum of diseases, emphasizing autonomy in a practice model supported by physician colleagues. UVA fosters a culture of ongoing education and professional development for engaged learners.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Conduct daily interdisciplinary rounds, including patient presentations.
  2. Formulate evidence-based care plans independently for critically ill patients.
  3. Respond to ICU consultations from emergency and acute care settings to assess patient acuity, perform triage, and develop initial care plans.
  4. Perform bedside procedures with training and competency, including central & arterial line insertion, paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture.
  5. Lead in high-stress situations within a dynamic care environment.
  6. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members, including complex psychosocial issues.
  7. Lead goals of care discussions and assist patients and families with end-of-life decisions.
  8. Identify and coordinate with subspecialists as needed.
  9. Perform detailed history and physical examinations, analyze data, and develop differential diagnoses and care plans.
  10. Prescribe and adjust therapies based on patient responses.
  11. Collaborate regularly with a multidisciplinary team.
  12. Bill for critical and non-critical care services consistently.
  13. Engage in self-directed learning and quality improvement initiatives.
Additional Information:
  • Work a rotating schedule of days, nights, weekends, and holidays in 12-hour shifts.
  • Major holidays are staffed on a rotating schedule.
  • Submit a cover letter with your application.
  • Acute Care certification is preferred for NP candidates.
Additional Duties:

Includes collaboration with medical directors, independent judgment in patient assessment, diagnosis, procedures, medication management, referrals, patient education, participation in on-call duties, adherence to policies, coding, continuing education, and mentoring students and staff.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master's degree.
  • Virginia licensure or eligibility as an Advanced Practice Provider.
  • Current BLS, PALS/NRP, and ACLS certifications as required.
Physical Demands:

Prolonged standing, bending, reaching, repetitive motions, and lifting 50-100 lbs. May be exposed to various hazards including infectious materials.
