UVA Health - ICU Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Job Description

UVA Health is seeking a Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join its Medical ICU (MICU) advanced practice provider (APP) team. The selected candidate will join a collaborative team of APPs, physicians, and specialists managing critically ill patients at UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA, within the UVA School of Medicine's Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine and UVA Health's Center for Advanced Practice.

Post-onboarding, MICU APPs will manage 4-6 ICU patients with diverse diseases, emphasizing autonomous practice supported by physician colleagues. UVA fosters a culture of ongoing education and professional development, welcoming engaged learners.

Key responsibilities include:

1. Daily interdisciplinary rounds, including patient presentations.
2. Formulating evidence-based care plans independently for critically ill patients.
3. Responding to ICU consultations from emergency and acute care floors, assessing patient acuity, performing triage, and developing initial care plans.
4. With training, performing bedside procedures such as central and arterial line insertions, paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture.
5. Leading during high-stress situations in a dynamic environment.
6. Communicating care plans effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members, including navigating complex psychosocial issues.
7. Leading goals of care discussions and assisting with end-of-life decisions.
8. Identifying and consulting sub-specialists as needed.
9. Performing history and physical examinations, analyzing data to develop differential diagnoses and care plans.
10. Prescribing therapies and adjusting plans based on patient responses.
11. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
12. Billing for critical and non-critical care services.
13. Engaging in self-directed learning, process improvement, and quality initiatives.

Additional information:

• Work involves rotating shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Major holidays are staffed on a rotating schedule.
• Shifts are 12 hours, totaling approximately 40 hours per week.
