Job description

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Advanced Practice Provider to join our team in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Intensive Care Unit (TCV ICU).

As a member of our dynamic and collaborative multidisciplinary team, you will play a pivotal role in providing exceptional critical care management to our postoperative cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery patients.

Following a 3-month onboarding process, newly hired TCV ICU APPs will manage care of 6-8 patients representing the cardiac, vascular, and thoracic surgery population in a practice model that emphasizes independence with the support and collaboration of physician colleagues. As an academic medical center, UVA possesses a rich culture of continual education and professional development that welcomes engaged learners. We work closely with resident physicians and students of all specialties including medical, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner students.

Beyond the qualities included in the general position description, success in a TCV ICU APP role will require the following:

  1. Accepting new OR admissions, hospital transfers, and urgent acute transfers along with coordinating discharges and transfers
  2. Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients admitted to the TCV ICU, including those who have undergone cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgeries, heart and lung transplantation, or require ECMO or other mechanical circulatory support devices.
  3. Develop and implement evidence-based care plans tailored to individual patient needs, ensuring optimal outcomes and safety.
  4. Prescribe appropriate therapies, evaluate responses, and adjust care plans accordingly.
  5. Perform interventions and procedures within scope, such as invasive monitoring, ventilator management, and hemodynamic support.
  6. Perform ICU bedside interventions including bronchoscopy, central line, arterial, and chest tube placements.
  7. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to coordinate care and facilitate communication.
  8. Maintain accurate documentation of assessments, interventions, and outcomes.
  9. Engage in self-directed learning, process improvement, and quality initiatives.

Additional information:

  • This is a 24/7 position; weekends, nights, and holidays (on rotation) are required.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Work with the medical director and interprofessional team to facilitate patient care.
  • Exercise independent judgment in assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of medical procedures.
  • Perform health assessments, including emergency interventions as needed.
  • Formulate diagnoses, identify problems, and communicate with the healthcare team.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic studies.
  • Perform procedures within credentialing and privileges.
  • Order medications and treatments according to regulations.
  • Request consultations and referrals as needed.
  • Evaluate patient responses to interventions.
  • Educate patients and families about disease processes and treatments.
  • Participate in on-call duties and adhere to institutional policies.
  • Report critical health information to relevant authorities promptly.
  • Meet quality standards and serve on committees if needed.
  • Participate in educational activities and professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Compensation Range:

$98,841.60 - $158,142.40 annually

Minimum Requirements:
  • Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master's degree.
  • Department and unit-specific experience.
  • Virginia licensure or eligibility as an Advanced Practice Provider.
  • Current BLS, PALS/NRP (if required), and ACLS (if required).
Physical Demands:

Prolonged standing, bending, reaching, repetitive motions, and lifting up to 100 lbs. May be exposed to various hazards including infectious materials.
