Job description

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (MSA) position serves as the advanced Clerk for all Medical Support Assistant (MSA) roles and is a foundational position within Primary Care. The Advanced MSA provides administrative support and collaborates with patient aligned care teams (PACT), which include physicians, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and other team members.

Major Duties:

Requirements

Applicants pending educational or certification/licensure completion may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA policy.
  • Proficiency in English
  • Experience/Education/Combination: At least six months of clerical, office, customer service, or administrative work; or one year above high school (transcripts required); or an equivalent combination of experience and education (transcripts required).

Current VHA employees may qualify under the Grandfathering Provision if they meet specific criteria.

Grade Determinations

To qualify for GS-06, candidates must have one year of experience equivalent to GS-05, including scheduling, appointment management, demographic verification, and basic eligibility processing. Candidates must demonstrate:

  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary medical teams.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work independently.
  • Effective communication skills across various formats and audiences.
  • Advanced knowledge of healthcare processes, policies, and medical terminology.
