Job description

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (MSA) position serves as the advanced Clerk for all Medical Support Assistant (MSA) roles and is a foundational position within Primary Care. The Advanced MSA provides administrative support and collaborates with patient aligned care teams (PACT), which include physicians, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and other team members.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in English.
  • Experience/Education/Combination: Six months of clerical, office, customer service, or administrative work; OR one year above high school (transcripts required); OR an equivalent combination of experience and education (transcripts required).

Current VHA employees may qualify under the Grandfathering Provision if they meet specific criteria.

Grade Determinations

To qualify for GS-06, candidates must have one year of experience equivalent to GS-05, which includes scheduling, appointment management, verifying demographics, processing transfers, and basic eligibility and coverage requirements.

Candidates must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Effective collaboration and communication with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Ability to set priorities and organize work independently.
  • Effective communication skills in various formats and with diverse audiences, including report preparation and patient concern resolution.
  • Advanced knowledge of healthcare processes, policies, and procedures affecting patient access and flow.
  • Proficiency in medical terminology related to clinical language.

Physical Requirements:
