Job description

The Dayton, Ohio VAMC is looking for an Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) to support the Call Center. The AMSA will play an integral role in achieving first-contact resolution through Veteran-centered delivery of care. The role involves providing information on programs and initiatives available to Veterans and making administrative referrals of services as needed.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • a. Citizenship: United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • b. Experience and/or Education:
    • Experience: Six months experience of clerical, office, or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position;
    • or
    • Education: One year above high school;
    • or
    • Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
  • c. English Language Proficiency: MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005.

Grade Determinations GS-6

  • Ability to collaborate and communicate with a wide range of medical clinicians across multiple disciplines to accomplish team goal setting.
  • Ability to independently set priorities and organize work to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Effective communication skills in various formats, including report preparation and data presentation.
  • Advanced knowledge of healthcare processes related to access to care and operational activities affecting patient flow.
  • Proficiency in medical terminology due to technical language used by clinicians.

a. Creditable Experience:

  • Knowledge of Current MSA Practices: Experience must demonstrate the KSAs associated with current MSA responsibilities.
  • Quality of Experience: Must be at a level comparable to MSA experience at the next lower grade level, with significant scope, independence, and complexity.
  • Part-Time Experience: Creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek.

Preferred Experience:

  • Operate computerized programs and systems to manage sensitive medical and patient information.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology related to diagnoses and procedures.
  • Scheduling medical appointments.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with customers and staff.
  • Customer service skills to identify concerns and facilitate resolutions.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06.

Physical Requirements

Position requires visual acuity, auditory perception, clear speech, manual dexterity, and potentially extended sitting periods. Must be capable of working effectively in stressful situations, meet Employee Health mandates, and be flexible to shift priorities based on patient needs.
