Job summary

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is hiring a Superintendent of Adult Institutions to oversee shelter operations, security coordination, and program delivery across social services, health, and recreation. The role requires strong leadership to ensure safety, service quality, and compliance with city standards.

The selected candidate will supervise diverse teams, engage with community boards, and may assume Deputy Director duties when needed.

Qualifications

• Four-year high school diploma or educational equivalent with six years of full-time supervisory experience in social services or related fields.
• Bachelor's degree may count as two years of experience; a Master’s may count as one additional year; casework experience in shelters may substitute up to four years.

Responsibilities

• Monitor shelter operations to ensure compliance with agency standards and regulations.
• Oversee security personnel with Site Managers and designees.
• Serve as Certified Fire Safety Coordinator for the shelter to meet fire code requirements.
• Provide oversight of social services, recreation, medical, mental health, and substance abuse programs.
• Evaluate and review program effectiveness; implement improvements and new programs as needed.
• Plan policies and interact with Community Boards to maintain good community relations.
• Assume Deputy Director of Operations duties in their absence.
