Job description

This is a 10-month, in-person position with employment dates August - May. June and July will be designated as a seasonal layoff period. (Specific dates will be provided prior to the layoff period each year.)

Help students see what's possible-and guide them all the way to "Yes."

Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) is seeking an Admissions Counselor who is energized by outreach, inspired by access and equity, and skilled at building relationships. You'll recruit talented, high-potential students from diverse backgrounds and lead them from first interest to enrollment- through school visits, college fairs, one-to-one conversations, and engaging on-campus experiences.

About the Job

If you're at your best when you're meeting people, telling a compelling story, and turning curiosity into commitment, this role is for you. You'll be a visible ambassador for JCSU- partnering with high schools, community organizations, educators, alumni, and families- while guiding prospective students through admissions, scholarships/financial aid information, and next steps. You'll blend outreach with organization: plan events, manage your territory, track your progress, and keep every student moving toward their goals.

What You’ll Do
  • Recruit and enroll: Identify, engage, and support diverse student populations through high school visits, college fairs, interviews, campus tours, and individual counseling.
  • Build partnerships: Cultivate strong relationships with guidance counselors, educators, alumni, and community organizations to help JCSU meet its enrollment goals.
  • Tell the story: Promote JCSU's academic programs and student experience with clear, welcoming communication - online, in person, and at events.
  • Guide every step: Advise prospects on admissions policies, timelines, and next steps; share information on scholarships and financial aid; maintain consistent follow-up through enrollment.
  • Own key functions: Coordinate one or more focus areas (e.g., direct mail, campus tours, web/virtual outreach, international and diverse student recruitment).
  • Run the playbook: Review and process applications; maintain accurate student records and reports; plan and execute recruitment and orientation programs; manage travel logistics and documentation in a timely, compliant manner.
  • Represent with integrity: Uphold JCSU's brand and values in every interaction—with students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners.
You’ll Thrive Here If You Are
  • relationship-builder who connects quickly with students, families, and school partners.
  • clear, encouraging communicator - comfortable presenting to groups and supporting students one-on-one.
  • Organized and follow-through strong, able to manage travel, events, and application workflows without losing the personal touch.
  • Equity-minded and student-centered, committed to widening access and supporting diverse learners.
  • Data-aware and accountable, keeping records current and using insights to prioritize outreach.
What to Expect
  • Travel to high schools, college fairs, and community events (seasonal).
  • Evening/weekend activities during peak recruitment periods.
  • Daily use of CRM/records systems, email, phone, and presentation tools; occasional driving.
Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor's degree supplemented by one to three years of substantive experience in admissions, recruitment, high school guidance, public relations, counseling or other relevant field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Excellent interpersonal skills (written, verbal, phone) and work ethic required. Travel required; must have a valid driver's license. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and some weekends. Bilingual skills (English/Spanish or other) are desirable. Must have a valid driver's license.

Background Check
