Job summary

City of Carson is seeking an Administrative Intern III to assist with data entry, event coordination and project support in a professional municipal environment. This part-time, non-exempt internship is limited to 960 hours per fiscal year and may require evening or weekend meetings.

The ideal candidate is an organized senior or recent graduate with strong Microsoft Office skills, able to learn new software quickly and communicate effectively with staff and the public.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled as a senior or graduate student or must have graduated from a 4-year college program within the last six months and have the equivalent of 6 months full-time administrative, para-professional, technical or advanced clerical work experience.
  • Strong English, mathematics and research skills; ability to learn and adapt to new software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related software; able to perform data entry and report preparation.

Responsibilities

  • Performs professional administrative duties in support of divisional or departmental operations.
  • Performs research, compiles data and prepares reports related to administrative and operational matters.
  • Conducts surveys and studies and makes recommendations based on findings.
  • Assists with file maintenance, data entry and generates reports using a variety of computer software programs.
  • Prepares written correspondence.
  • Participates in the preparation and revision of brochures and other administrative materials.
  • Works with other professional employees assigned to special work projects.
  • Provides information to and consults with staff and the public.
  • Operates a variety of office machines, including a personal computer.
  • Attends meetings or events in the evening or on weekends.
  • May drive to different locations to perform work, site inspections/surveys or attend meetings within and outside the City.
  • Performs related duties as required.

The City of Carson is now accepting applications for the Administrative Intern III position. We are seeking motivated current college and university seniors, as well as recent college and university graduates, who are eager to gain hands on experience in a professional municipal environment. This opportunity provides valuable exposure to local government, allowing interns to develop practical skills, contribute to meaningful projects, and support City programs and services.

The ideal candidate is:
  • Organized and detail oriented.
  • Eager to support administrative operations and departmental initiatives.
  • Comfortable assisting with data entry, event coordination, and project support.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications or similar software, with the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new software programs and systems.
Position Information:

This is a part-time position (FLSA: non-exempt), limited to 960 hours per fiscal year. Typical work schedule will vary between the business hours of 7 am to 6 pm, Monday to Thursday.

Job Summary:

Education and Experience:
  • Must be enrolled in a college or university as a senior or graduate student or must have graduated from a 4-year college program within the last six months and have the equivalent of 6 months full-time administrative, para-professional, technical or advanced clerical work experience.
Knowledge of:
  • Modern English usage.
  • Mathematics, including statistics.
  • Research and analytical methods.
  • Personal computers and related software applications.
  • Methods of report presentation.
Skill and Ability to:
  • Compile, review and evaluate data.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Learn City organization, operations, policies and objectives.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Deal tactfully with the public.

Recruitment Process:

The recruitment will remain open on a continuous basis until all positions are filled. The most qualified candidates will be invited to continue in the selection process, which will include the following components:
