Job summary

The City of Carson is seeking qualified applicants for the part-time Recreation Assistant IV classification. This role works within the Community Services, Recreation, & Park Maintenance Department, supporting parks, aquatic centers, and the community center with a focus on outreach and program leadership.

Ideal candidates will have strong communication, attention to detail, and teamwork skills, plus about one year of leadership in recreation activities.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to completion of thirty (30) semester units at a recognized college with a major in recreation or related field.
  • Approximately one (1) year of leadership experience in a variety of recreation activities.
  • Proof of education is required; transcripts or degree image as applicable.

The City of Carson is seeking qualified applicants for the part‑time Recreation Assistant IV classification. This position is employed throughout our Community Services, Recreation, & Park Maintenance Department which oversees City owned and operated parks, aquatic centers, and community center. The Community Services, Recreation, & Park Maintenance Department also oversees the administration of various community based social and health services, including art programs, senior activities, and Early Childhood education.


As such, the ideal candidates must be motivated individuals, who are eager to serve the community. This position requires excellent communication skills, ability to pay attention to details, and to work effectively with others.


These positions are part‑time/temporary, at‑will (FLSA: Non‑Exempt) assignments that are limited to a maximum of 960 hours per fiscal year. While part‑time employees are generally not eligible for benefits, they may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals in accordance with applicable federal and state laws.


Work schedules and hours may vary based on departmental needs, and many Recreation Assistant IV positions require availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.


Job Summary

Under general supervision, supervise various recreational programs; and perform related duties as required.


(These functions are representative and may not be present in all positions in the class. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind related duties and work assignments.)



  1. Assists in organizing and supervising established recreation programs and a variety of other recreational activities such as youth and adult programs and sports leagues, tournaments, clubs, special events, excursions, and free play activities at various City facilities as needed.

  2. Organizes holiday and vacation programs.

  3. Assists in supervising part‑time personnel assigned to a recreation center.

  4. Collects registration fees and maintains accurate records of monies received.

  5. Assists in recruiting and training seasonal part‑time and volunteer personnel.

  6. Administers first aid.


Education and/or Experience

Equivalent to completion of thirty (30) semester units at a recognized college with a major in recreation or related field and approximately one (1) year of leadership experience in a variety of recreation activities.



  • Proof of education is required (excluding high school diploma/G.E.D. certificate) - official/unofficial transcripts for applicants who did not earn a college degree yet. For those who earned a degree, you must attach a viable image of your degree, reflecting your name.


Knowledge of


  • Principles of supervision.

  • Sports, games and group activities.

  • Rules, practices and equipment used in diversified recreation program.


Skill and/or Ability to


  • Learn and apply first aid and safety techniques.

  • Organize recreational activities for varied segments of the community.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.


License and Certificates

Possession of a valid American Red Cross Standard First Aid certificate is desirable.


WORKING CONDITIONS


  • Require standing, stooping, reaching, and bending.

  • Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.

  • Require lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects which may weigh 40 pounds and up to 60 pounds.


RECRUITMENT PROCESS

  • Supplemental Questionnaire, no weight

  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) Review, 100.00% weight

Supplemental questionnaires are used to evaluate applicant’s indicated abilities with the ideal candidate profile. Passing any/all of the examination sections does not guarantee an invitation to the selection interview. The Human Resources Department reserves the right to invite those amongst the highest scoring to the next phase of the recruitment. Revisions to a testing component during a recruitment process can be made at the discretion of the Human Resources Department. Applicants will be notified by email if a revision is made. An eligibility list will be established in accordance with the City’s Personnel Rules, Rule VI, Employment List Procedures.
