Job summary

City of Carson Swim Instruction II position available with our Aquatics team. This part-time, at-will role emphasizes safety, technique, and lifeguard supervision to help all ages become confident, capable swimmers.

Under supervision, you enforce pool rules, monitor activities, and provide CPR/First Aid as needed while teaching classes and coaching related water programs. Certification in ARC WSI, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Lifeguard Training is required or desirable.

Qualifications

  • Formal education sufficient to read/write at required level.
  • Knowledge of Water Safety Instruction, First Aid, CPR.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and instruct swimming classes; enforce rules.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces pool rules and regulations for safe use.
  • Monitors pool and surrounding area for emergencies.
  • Rescues bathers as needed if lifeguard certified.
  • Administers CPR and First Aid when required.
  • Instructs swimming classes and aquatic activities.

Job description

The City of Carson is now accepting applications for Swim Instructor II positions.

This recruitment will remain open until vacancies are filled and may close without notice. Applications will be reviewed weekly.

Come and join our Aquatics team. Help shape confidence, safety, and lifelong skills as a Swim Instructor II with the City of Carson’s Community Services / Recreation / Park Maintenance Department. In this impactful role, you will lead swim instruction programs that empower children, youth, and adults to become strong, safe swimmers. Through encouragement, patience, and expertise, you will not only teach technique—you will build confidence and promote water safety awareness that can save lives. Your dedication will directly contribute to a safer, healthier community.

These positions are part-time/temporary, at-will (FLSA: Non-Exempt) positions that are limited to a maximum of 960 hours per fiscal year. Part-time employees are not typically eligible for benefits; however, they may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

Mandatory Program Participation Dates
  • May 30 & May 31, 2026: Aquatics Summer In-Service
  • June 4, 2026: Community Services / Recreation / Park Maintenance Department - Summer In-Service
Job Summary

Under close supervision, supervises and instructs aquatic activities at a community swimming pool; and performs related duties as required.

(These functions are representative and may not be present in all positions in the class. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind related duties and work assignments.)

  1. Enforces established rules and regulations governing the safe use of pools.
  2. Monitors the swimming pool and surrounding area for emergencies.
  3. Rescues bathers as necessary, if lifeguard certified.
  4. Renders CPR and first aid as needed.
  5. Instructs swimming classes and aquatic activities.
  6. Coaches competitive swimming or other related water sports.
  7. Maintains and cleans the pool and surrounding area.
  8. Prepares reports of rescues or unusual occurrences as needed.
  9. Interprets current policies and procedures to the public.

A typical way to obtain the requisite qualifications to perform the duties of this class is as follows:

Education and Experience

Completion of formal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.

Knowledge of
  • Water Safety Instruction.
  • First Aid and CPR.
Skill and Ability to
  • Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Instruct classes in swimming and aquatic activities.
  • Enforce water safety rules and regulations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
License and Certificates

Possession of a valid American Red Cross Water Safety Instruction certificate. Possession of an American Red Cross Standard First Aid certificate. Possession of an American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificate. Possession of an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Standard First Aid certificate is desirable.

Recruitment Process

This recruitment will remain open on a continuous basis until all positions are filled. Applications will be evaluated for depth and breadth of experience and the level and relevance of education. The most qualified candidates will be invited to continue in the selection process, which will include the following components:

  • Supplemental Questionnaire, no weight
  • SME review, no weight
  • Selection Interview, weighted at 100%

The Human Resources Department reserves the right to adjust, modify, delete and/or change the above exam types and/or weights. Supplemental questionnaires are used to evaluate applicant’s indicated abilities with the ideal candidate profile. The Human Resources Department reserves the right to invite those amongst the highest scoring to the next phase of the recruitment.

NOTE

Appointment
