Job summary

The City of Chesapeake, Virginia is seeking an Accountant II to join the Police Department. You will provide accounting support across budgeting, grants, procurement, and asset management in a service-driven municipal setting.

Key tasks include processing multi-source accounting functions, grant/capital project support, and producing financial reports while ensuring compliance with City, State, and Federal policies. A CPA is preferred and a valid driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

  • Requires bachelor’s degree in accounting or closely related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Minimum of three years of related full-time accounting experience.
  • CPA certification desired; valid driver’s license and compliant driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Process accounting functions across multiple funding sources including procurement, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, budgeting, revenue, grants, capital projects, and seized assets.
  • Support grant and capital project management including budgeting, reconciliations, reporting, and general ledger entries.
  • Act as procurement subject matter expert ensuring compliance with City, State, and Federal policies.
  • Assist with procurement documentation such as RFQs, IFBs, RFPs, and sole source requests.
  • Manage asset tracking, dispositions, and annual fixed asset inventory.
  • Oversee forfeited and seized asset accounting, including reconciliations and reporting.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management and Finance.

Job Description

The City of Chesapeake is seeking a detail-oriented, customer service–focused Accountant I to join the Chesapeake Police Department.

As an Accountant II, you will support departmental operations through accurate financial processing, procurement coordination, budgeting, grant and capital project support, asset management, and financial reporting. This Accountant role is ideal for someone who values precision, enjoys problem-solving, and thrives in a collaborative, service-driven environment.

As an Accountant you will provide accounting support and customer service while:

  • Processing accounting functions across multiple funding sources, including procurement, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, budgeting, revenue, grants, capital projects, and seized/forfeited assets
  • Supporting grant and capital project management, including budgeting, reconciliations, reporting, Council agenda materials, general ledger entries, and closeouts
  • Serving as the Accountant subject matter expert in procurement, ensuring compliance with City, State, and Federal policies
  • Assisting with procurement documentation such as RFQs, IFBs, RFPs, and sole source requests
  • Managing asset tracking, including additions, disposals, and annual fixed asset inventory
  • Overseeing forfeited and seized asset accounting, including reconciliations, tracking, and reporting
  • Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management and Finance

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT : Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in accounting or closely related field. Master’s degree in accounting, business, public administration or a related field desired.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT : In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of three years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Certified Public Accountant certification desired. Requires valid driver’s license and driving record in compliance with the City Driving Standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Accounting and procurement experience in a local government agency.
