Job summary

Boston College Libraries are seeking an Access Services Assistant to join the Access Services Department at O'Neill Library. The Assistant plays a central role in fulfillment operations, collection maintenance, course reserves support, and library outreach, while staffing service points at O'Neill and Bapst Libraries.

This full-time position oversees interlibrary loan shipments, student staff supervision, and patron requests across multiple facilities, with a Tuesday–Saturday 2:00 PM–10:00 PM

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Strong service orientation and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and collaborate in a team.
  • Ability to use social media platforms and design software (Canva or Adobe).
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and ability to operate the courier vehicle.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects as defined by OSHA regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Process interlibrary loan shipments (approx. 30,000 items annually), ensuring packaging and turnaround meet standards with partners.
  • Train and supervise student employees in fulfillment duties.
  • Process patron requests moving to/from three off-site storage facilities.
  • Support Course Reserves workflows and resolve broken links.
  • Participate in collection maintenance across O'Neill, Bapst, and off-site locations; update item records.
  • Maintain Access Services signage, promotional materials, and social media content with Graphic Designer and Outreach Committee.
  • Staff and close service points at O'Neill and Bapst Libraries; serve as primary contact for facilities/patron issues.

Job Description

Boston College Libraries are seeking an Access Services Assistant to join the Access Services Department at O'Neill Library. Under the direction of the Offsite Collections and Delivery Services Manager, the Assistant plays a central role in fulfillment operations, collection maintenance, course reserves support, and library outreach, while also staffing service points at O'Neill and Bapst Libraries.

The responsibilities for this position include:

  • Processing incoming and outgoing interlibrary loan shipments (approximately 30,000 items annually), ensuring packaging and turnaround meet contractual standards with resource-sharing partners,
  • Training and supervising student employees assigned to various fulfillment duties,
  • Processing patron requests moving to and from three off-site storage facilities,
  • Supporting Course Reserves workflows, including resolving broken links, processing resource lists, and responding to faculty, instructor, and student inquiries
  • Participating in collection maintenance projects across O'Neill, Bapst, and off-site locations, including shifting, inventory, and item record updates
  • Maintaining Access Services signage, promotional materials, and social media content in coordination with the library's Graphic Designer and Outreach Committee,
  • Staffing and closing service points at O'Neill and Bapst Libraries, including circulation and returns processing, and serving as a primary contact for facilities or patron issues.

This is a full-time, 35-hour-per-week, 52-week position with full benefits

Scheduled hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 2:00 PM–10:00 PM, with adjustments during holidays, finals periods, and the summer session.

Hiring Range: $22.69/hr to $28.35/hr. Pay rate commensurate with relevant experience.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree preferred

  • Ability to use social media platforms and commercial design software preferred (e.g., Canva or Adobe)

  • Ability to lift heavy objects as defined by OSHA regulations and push a fully loaded book truck
