Job summary

Responsibilities

• Assist with commissioning and documentation of building access control systems; maintain clean work areas and complete work orders in the CMMS.
• Rotating on-call schedule with after-hours work as needed; coordinate with vendors and teams.

Building Systems Maintenance has four levels of Access/Security Technicians, and the level is determined by a candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities, and applicable licensure.
Access/Security Technician I, II, III and IV: All Access/Security Technicians assist with the installation, maintenance, alteration, addition, troubleshooting, and repair of low voltage electrical systems relative to building access and security equipment, interpret and use schematics and blueprint drawings to complete the installation and troubleshooting of electrical conduit systems, wiring and device termination in a commercial construction setting, assist with commissioning and documentation of building access control systems, maintain cleanliness and organization in assigned work areas, and complete work orders and utilize an electronic timekeeping system.
Access/Security Technician II: In addition to the duties and responsibilities above, a level II will work more independently and be given more complex duties such as ensuring compliance with regulations such as applicable building, electrical, and fire codes, and university and departmental standards and guidelines, and assisting with commissioning, programming, and documentation of building access control and security systems.
Access/Security Technician III : In addition to the duties and responsibilities above, a level III performs basic door and security systems programming, confirms scope, schedule, and budget requirements of work assignments and coordinates changes, tests and diagnoses circuits in low voltage electrical and building access controls wiring and equipment using testing devices, coordinates work and schedules, and trains, mentors, and verifies works of others.
Access/Security Technician IV: In addition to the duties and responsibilities above, a level IV installs and configures access control and security networking communication and alarm monitoring systems, assists leadership in project development, employee training, and safety coordination, communicates and coordinates with outside vendors and manufacturers relative to electrical equipment and systems, coordinates project changes and provide as-built documentation at the completion of the project, generate activity and outage notifications, and conduct access control and security estimating. Additionally, a level 4 contributes to fostering a positive work environment, motivates and encourages staff to improve, supports leadership, and contributes to the development and implementation of departmental vision and goals.
All levels will be assigned to a rotating on-call schedule and urgent situations occasionally require after-hours work.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Access/Security Technician I, II, III , and IV: High school or equivalent experience. Able to lift 50 lbs. Able to work from a ladder and/or aerial equipment. Available by cell phone to assist with campus emergencies and available for regular rotations on the weekend and after-hours on-call schedule. Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirement and a State of Nebraska Apprentice Electrical License or the ability to obtain the license upon employment.
Access/Security Technician I: Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions. Thinking and reasoning skills. Good communication skills. Thoroughness and attention to detail. Good time management and organizational skills. Familiar with and able to operate tools and machinery.
Access/Security Technician II: In addition to the minimum qualifications above, a level II must have a minimum of 1 year experience in Access Control or Security Systems, or demonstrate an equivalent comprehension, and understanding of building and construction principles, electrical systems, applicable codes, and supporting electrical systems, a basic understanding of electrical theory, knowledgeable of and skilled in the processes, procedures, and codes required of the trade, and knowledge, experience, and ability to operate a variety of tools and machinery. Basic computer skills, good analytical thinking and reasoning skills, and strong communication skills are necessary. The ability to research, read, interpret, and work with project blueprints and specifications and skilled in operating testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and ammeters to test and diagnose circuits in low voltage electrical fire life safety equipment are essential.Access/Security Technician III : In addition to the minimum qualifications above, a level III must have a minimum of 2 years experience in access control or security Systems, or demonstrate an equivalent comprehension, a strong understanding of building and construction principles, electrical systems, applicable codes, supporting electrical systems, and electrical theory are required. A level III must also be knowledgeable in basic door and security systems programming, able to comprehend and follow complex and technical information, possess intermediate computer skills, strong analytical thinking and reasoning skills, excellent communication skills, and high attention to detail.
Access/Security Technician IV: In conjunction with the minimum qualifications above, a level IV must have a minimum of IV years experience in Access Control or Security Systems, or demonstrate an equivalent comprehension and a minimum of 2 years experience interfacing auxiliary Access and Security systems. Experience with UNL’s access control and security systems and performing access control and security estimating is required. A level IV must also be proficient in electrical theory and National Electrical Code and in access and security panel network configuration and programming.

Preferred Qualifications

Access/Security Technician I, II, III and IV: Associate’s degree in electrical technology, other related field of study, or equivalent experience, a State of Nebraska Journeyman Electrical license, and/or proficient in Microsoft Office products.Access/Security Technician I: In addition to the preferred qualifications above, a level I is preferred to have experience with MicroKey alarm monitoring software, IPDact network configuration, and/or with AutoCAD, basic computer skills, familiar with a CMMS and/or EMCS , and/or knowledge of or experience with building and fire codes.
Access/Security Technician II: In conjunction with the preferred qualifications above, a level II is preferred to have 6 or more months experience using MicroKey alarm monitoring software, IPDact network configuration, using AutoCAD, and/or using door access and security software. Intermediate computer skills, completed all UNL and BSM required training courses, proficient using an EMCS and/or a CMMS , and/or knowledge of operational building and fire codes are preferred.
Access/Security Technician III and IV: In conjunction with the preferred qualifications above, a level III and IV are preferred to have 1 year or more months experience using MicroKey alarm monitoring software, IPDact network configuration, using AutoCAD, and/or using door access and security software. Completion of all UNL and BSM required training courses, proficient using an EMCS and/or a CMMS are preferred.
