Job summary

McMurry University in Abilene, Texas seeks an Academic Coach to support the Warhawk Success Center by delivering direct services to students.

You will help students set academic and career goals, teach learning strategies, time management, organization, self-regulation and self-efficacy through individual or group coaching. This role also collaborates with faculty and staff to monitor progress and connect students with campus resources to accelerate academic success.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2–3 years in higher education or related field.
  • Strong time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

  • Foster persistence and completion for a caseload of students.
  • Monitor progress through check-ins and proactive outreach.
  • Conduct academic coaching sessions to develop success plans.
  • Help students build self-efficacy and time management skills.
  • Refer students to appropriate academic resources and collaborate with staff.
  • Document meetings and report on departmental goals.
  • Coordinate with faculty to meet students’ academic needs.
  • Engage in end-of-term interventions as needed.

Job Summary

This individual will work in support of the Warhawk Success Center (WHSC) to provide direct services to students. The Academic Coach helps students develop skills, behaviors and habits that contribute to success in college. These includes academic and career goal setting, learning strategies, time management and organization, self-regulation and self-efficacy.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Fosters persistence and completion of a caseload of students
  • Monitors progress of students in caseload with check-ins, scheduled meetings or proactive outreach and communication, responding to students questions, concerns and needs
  • Conducts academic coaching through individual or group sessions that help students assess their own performance and develop academic success plans
  • Assists students in developing self-efficacy by identifying and overcoming obstacles that may be impeding academic success; works with students to learn strong time management and organization skills; motivates students to practice self-regulation and take ownership of their academic success
  • Helps students in identifying, developing and implementing learning strategies and study skills specific to course materials
  • Refers students to appropriate academic personnel and support resources and collaborates with others to monitor and accelerate the academic progress of the students referred
  • Performs duties that are unique to specific department or academic college
  • Evaluate the academic progress of students completing the Academic Success Plan
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of all meetings with students
  • Maintain regular communication with students throughout the semester
  • Conduct during-term and end-of-term student interventions as needed based on course performance and/orGPA
  • Coordinate with faculty and staff to help meet students’ academic needs
  • Connect at-risk students with appropriate academic support programming
  • Collect, document, and provide necessary reports related to departmental goals
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, 2-3 years of experience in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or other closely related field;
  • Strong time management and problem solving skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of campus constituencies
Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or other closely related field is preferred.
