Primary Purpose of Position

The primary role of an Academic Advisor is to provide individual advising to undergraduate students. Advisors serve as liaisons for various academic departments and colleges. This advising position works with students to enhance engagement in their major, college, university, and community at large. Advisors provide one‑on‑one advising for students through graduation. The Advisor will assist students with course selection, entry into a concentration, course registration, and review of student records. This requires intentional contact with students by carefully tracking student progression using Degree Works and Degree Planner, as well as the early alert system to identify and contact students at‑risk. Advisors also refer students to appropriate learning resources and provide students with supportive technical information.

The Academic Advisor will serve as a member of the academic advising team. Advisors work in partnership with undergraduate degree program directors and faculty to ensure that students stay on course with professional requirements throughout their program of study. The Advisor provides outreach to prospective and readmitted students, participates in professional development opportunities, teaches freshman seminar, and serves on university committees. Academic advisors work closely with ECU Admissions in support of recruitment efforts such as Pirates Aboard, Open House, Pirates in Your Town, Pirate Promise, freshman orientation and transfer orientation. This position is responsible for advising traditional, nontraditional, distance education and transfer students while using various advising methods such as face to face, phone, computer, and written materials.

Job Duties

Academic Advising – 75%

• Manage an active student advising caseload up to 350 students in the College of Health & Human Sciences
• Maintain and uphold university policies and expectation of professional advising
• Utilize precise record keeping regarding student advising caseload

Project Management – 10%

• Manage special projects and advising initiatives independently as assigned by immediate supervisor
• Work with departmental faculty and program directors with course projections, admissions, etc.
• Monitor and report activities related to position regarding student course plans, course needs and projections
• Actively participate on committees including advisory and departmental/programs

Recruitment/Retention – 15%

• Assist Academic Advising with recruitment and outreach projects related to enrollment initiatives
• Assist with recruitment efforts such as Pirates Aboard, Open House, Pirates in Your Town, Pirate Promise, freshman orientation and transfer orientation
• Provide information regarding program specific outreach and needs
