Job description

At Chattanooga College MDTC, Advisors will help implement our strategy of “Where a small school can make a BIG difference!!”.

The Academic Advisor will provide advising to new and current online & hybrid students to assist with the acclimation to academic life, including registration for courses, assessing transfer credits, monitoring progress, and overcoming challenges and obstacles. Ideal candidates must have excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and listening skills. Candidates must be able to adapt to a high paced work environment and be able to manage multiple priorities and changing assignments.

This is a professional non-instructional advising position supporting an academic advising department. This position requires considerable contact with students through individual interviews, and group meetings. Academic Advisors are expected to possess extensive knowledge about academic programs, policies, procedures, and student support services within the scope of their responsibilities. They must be able to interpret student needs and provide individualized service, as well as dealing with students who may be confused or demanding.

Advisors can expect to advise students concerning their academic plans and progress, academic schedule, program of study, and other academic goals, to assist the student in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to graduation. Advisors will maintain confidentiality and manage accurate student records, to ensure compliance with accreditation standards and federal regulations (FERPA). Advisors will assist with student events, like Orientation and Graduation. Advisors will promote student learning and student success. Advisors will take a special interest in the underrepresented populations within the student body, helping to increase the retention of college-credit students, especially those from academically at-risk populations.

Salary Range

$37,500 to $43,000

Responsibilities
  1. Provides academic advising and support to a diverse population of students, to include performing daily supervision of students and making regular contact regarding student performance.
  2. Implements college strategic priorities related to advising, retention, and degree completion.
  3. Counsels and advises students as appropriate, including conducting individual and group advising sessions to address academic concerns and provide guidance, and including educating students on college resources, policies, and procedures.
  4. Implements solutions, including technology, to promote student degree progress and completion.
  5. Completes professional development training annually.
  6. Supports student services initiatives.
  7. Maintains student documentation and records, analyzing student records and academic progress to ensure compliance with college policies and requirements.
  8. Collaborates with other departments and colleagues to increase the retention and success of college-credit students, especially those from academically at-risk populations.
  9. Provides professional support and referrals for students with personal, social, and/or academic concerns that impair learning.
  10. Upholds confidentiality with students and abides by institutional and accreditation standards and federal regulations.
  11. Assists with the coordination of student events, including Orientation & Graduation, etc.
  12. Maintains advising tools to assist in advising students.
  13. Remains up-to-date on state and federal guidelines, emerging theories and research, and conceptual models related to advising, student access, and student success.
  14. Assists with schedule changes and certification of eligibility for graduation.
  15. Collaborates with the Director of Academic Advising.

Skills

Knowledge of the advisor’s role in providing learning support services for students. Ability to use technologies to promote and support student access and success, to include Microsoft, student information systems, & student learning platforms.

Education & Experience

Education or training: Master’s degree in counseling or a related student development field is preferred.

Years of experience in field: A minimum of four years’ experience in counseling/advising or a related student development field is required; community college or higher education experience in an academic institution is preferred.
