Job Summary

Michigan Ross and Michigan Engineering, both ranked in the top five for undergraduates by U.S. News & World Report, first began offering a dual degree in 2004. The vision for the new Integrated Business and Engineering at Michigan (IBEM) dual‑degree program is to create a cohesive experience for students, which will deepen their learning and prepare graduates for leadership roles in various industries. We are seeking an Academic Advisor to provide strategic guidance that ensures student success. The position will report to the IBEM Program report to the Program Officer and also collaborate with the IBEM faculty director and student life coordinator as well as advising colleagues in both Engineering and Business.

Following several years of planning and pilot programs, the first official cohort of approximately 70 dual‑degree undergraduate students from Michigan Engineering and the Ross School of Business will begin in the Fall of 2026. Designed to be completed in four years, the dual degree offers integrated coursework in business and engineering, including action‑based learning opportunities and co‑curricular activities that enhance the student experience. Students who graduate from the program receive a Bachelor of Business Administration from Ross and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in any of 18 programs of study from Michigan Engineering.

Responsibilities
  • Student Advising and Support (40%): Advise dual degree students with in‑person/phone/video appointments and email on topics such as course selection and registration, major/career exploration, degree requirements, experiential learning opportunities, academic success strategies, University policies and those from Ross and Engineering, and academic and personal resources. Identify challenges and connect students with campus resources such as tutoring, career services, and other University support services. Assist and serve as a contact for students with unanticipated time‑sensitive situations, communicating with students, faculty, and other University units to provide students with support and appropriate resources. Keep up to date with relevant advising practice and research.
  • Academic Progress, Records, and Degree Evaluation (20%): Use advising technology to schedule appointments, review transcripts/degree audits/early warning grades, and record advising notes. Evaluate the applicability of AP/IB/dual enrollment, transfer, study abroad, and cross‑listed coursework toward both degrees. Track the progress of specific populations (e.g., students on academic progress notice) across both schools and provide early intervention and support for at‑risk students to develop strategies for academic success. Track cohort progress toward both degrees, including retention and time‑to‑degree metrics.
  • Cross‑School Collaboration, Policies, and Compliance (20%): Collaborate with advising units in Ross and Engineering to ensure students receive a seamless advising experience for both degrees, including regular communication on program policies and requirements. Maintain advising documentation in compliance with FERPA.
  • Orientation and Student Information (10%): Coordinate orientation for incoming students. Present degree requirements and support resource information to students at orientation. May include the opportunity to recruit, train, and supervise student staff.
  • Program Events and Engagement (10%): Design, promote, and implement program‑related events. Assist the IBEM team with planning and executing large and small events. May occasionally require work during nights and weekends.
Required Qualifications
  • Intermediate level: Bachelor's Degree and 2+ years of related advising or student affairs experience, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Senior level: Bachelor's Degree and 4+ years of related advising or student affairs experience, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Experience using strong interpersonal, speaking, and writing skills.
