Job summary

Vancouver Public Schools is seeking a Special Program Paraeducator 1, Life Skills for a one-on-one position. The role supports students with disabilities, with 6.5 hours per day over 9 months per year and non-exempt status. Training includes CPI de-escalation and safety procedures.

Strong collaboration with teachers and staff is essential. Responsibilities include assisting with instructional activities, behavior management, data collection, and maintaining confidentiality.

Qualifications

• Documentation verifying a high school diploma or GED required.
• Associate's degree or 60 semester credits / 90 quarter credits OR ParaPro score 461+ required.
• One year of related experience working with children in an educational setting preferred.
• Experience as part of an educational team preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
• Ability to think quickly with good problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
• Experience with children with moderate to severe disabilities preferred.

Responsibilities

• Treat coworkers, supervisors, students, parents and others with dignity and respect at all times.
• Serve as a positive role model and model expected student behaviors.
• Work flexibly and cooperatively with team members and teachers.
• Assist the teacher in implementing and evaluating goals and objectives on individual student IEPs.
• Participate in team meetings and provide observational input.
• Manage behavior and assist students during class activities in small groups or individually.
• De-escalate students during emotional/behavioral crises and follow behavior plans.
• Assist with dispensing medication according to district policy.
• Provide support for personal hygiene and health-related tasks as trained.
• Assist with creating teaching materials and data entry/records as assigned.
