The issues we face are complex and multi-faceted, which impact the way the Public Service operates and organises itself. Internally, workforce changes require a new approach to workplace design, while technology’s widespread influence has fundamentally changed the way we conduct our business.
To prepare the Public Service for these changes, we need to transform the Public Service workplace into one that is lean, agile and digital. We also need to build a productive, collaborative and joyful workplace culture to meet the needs and aspirations of public officers. We are looking to redesign the workplace experience and create a stimulating and empowering work environment that supports officers’ growth, development and wellbeing.
In summary, our objective is to enhance Public Service employee experience, so that we have Public Officers who are inspired, supported, and equipped for the future.
By joining our #PeoplePurposePossibilities internship, you can play a role in improving the workplace experience of public officers, together with partners across the Whole-of-Government (WOG). You will be part of a team that strategises and implements WOG employee experience initiatives, conducts user research to understand officer needs, and coordinates with stakeholders across agencies to collectively enhance the lived experience of public officers.
You will have the opportunity to develop yourself in the following areas:
Programme Development and Implementation – You will assist in implementing employee experience initiatives which may include programmes that strengthen employee well-being, workplace connections, supervisory support, or officers’ experiences at key moments in their careers and life stages. You will support project coordination, progress tracking and basic outcome measurement. This may involve helping to coordinate engagement activities, supporting employee-led networks or communities, preparing project materials, maintaining stakeholder databases, and monitoring participation and feedback. You may also contribute to the development and refinement of selected employee experience projects by conducting research, gathering user insights, supporting stakeholder engagements and helping the team test and improve potential interventions. Through this work, you will contribute to broader efforts to enable purposeful and productive work, foster a flexible, collaborative and caring workplace, and build a diverse, agile and skilled Public Service.
Research and Insights– You will support user research activities including survey design, focus group facilitation, and basic data analysis to identify officer needs in major seasons and daily moments of their work-life. You will help distil data and insights to identify potential focus areas and contribute to evidence-based solutions.
Stakeholder Coordination– You will assist in coordinating with public agencies and partners by preparing meeting materials, following up on action items, maintaining communication channels, and supporting cross-agency collaboration efforts. You will learn to work with diverse stakeholders while understanding their unique contexts and business needs.
Skills You Will Develop – Through this internship, you will gain practical experience in understanding the Public Service HR ecosystem, exposure to user research methodologies, experience with cross-agency collaboration, and basic project management and coordination skills. You will also develop technical capabilities in using tech/AI tools like Copilot and ChatGPT for tasks such as data processing and analysis, process automation, summarisation of meetings and content creation.
