Job Description Overview
The Sustainability Lead Engineer will lead and oversee the implementation of sustainability strategies, environmental performance objectives and green building requirements throughout the construction supervision phase of major building and hospitality developments. The role is responsible for ensuring compliance with project sustainability targets, applicable regulations and international best practices while supporting the delivery of high-performance, resource-efficient and environmentally responsible developments.
Sustainability Management
- Develop and oversee sustainability monitoring programs aligned with project requirements and corporate sustainability goals
- Monitor project performance related to energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction and resource optimization
- Support the implementation of sustainability action plans and ensure achievement of project sustainability targets
- Promote sustainable procurement practices and encourage the use of environmentally preferable materials and technologies
- Identify opportunities to improve environmental and sustainability performance throughout the construction lifecycle
Green Building Certification Compliance
- Ensure project compliance with applicable green building rating systems and sustainability certification requirements
- Review contractor documentation and construction activities to verify alignment with targeted certification credits
- Coordinate with design consultants, contractors and certification bodies to address sustainability compliance requirements
- Maintain all evidence, records and documentation necessary for certification reviews and audits
- Monitor progress toward sustainability certification milestones and report status to project management and the Client
Environmental and Resource Efficiency Oversight
- Monitor implementation of resource management initiatives including energy, water and material consumption controls
- Ensure effective construction waste management, recycling and diversion programs are implemented on site
- Review environmental monitoring data and recommend corrective actions where sustainability objectives are not being achieved
- Promote best practices for reducing carbon emissions and minimizing environmental impacts associated with construction activities
- Support environmental compliance initiatives in coordination with HSE and environmental teams
Stakeholder Coordination
- Coordinate with Client representatives, project management teams, consultants, contractors and regulatory authorities on sustainability matters
- Participate in project meetings and provide technical guidance on sustainability performance and compliance requirements
- Facilitate sustainability workshops, awareness sessions, and training programs for project stakeholders
- Support responses to sustainability-related inquiries, reviews and audits conducted by external stakeholders
- Foster a culture of sustainability across all project participants and site personnel
Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare weekly and monthly sustainability performance reports for project management and Client review
- Maintain comprehensive sustainability records, compliance registers, audit reports and performance metrics
- Track key sustainability indicators and communicate performance trends and improvement opportunities
- Review contractor sustainability reports and verify accuracy of submitted data and supporting evidence
- Document non-conformities, corrective actions and lessons learned to support continual improvement
About you Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Sustainability Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Master's Degree in Sustainability, Environmental Management, Renewable Energy, or a related field is preferred.
- Professional accreditation such as LEED AP, Estidama PQP, WELL AP, Envision SP, or equivalent is highly desirable.
- Professional membership with a recognized engineering or sustainability institution is preferred.
- Additional certifications related to sustainability management, energy efficiency, or environmental systems are advantageous.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 12-15 years of professional experience in sustainability, environmental management, or green building projects.
- Minimum 7 years of experience in construction supervision or site supervision consultancy assignments.
- Proven experience delivering sustainability programs for large-scale buildings, convention centers, hotels, resorts, and mixed-use developments.
- Demonstrated experience with green building certifications such as LEED, Mostadam, BREEAM, WELL, or equivalent rating systems.
- Previous experience in GCC projects, particularly within Saudi Arabia, is highly preferred.
Technical Competencies
- Strong knowledge of sustainable design principles, green construction practices, and environmental management systems.
- Expertise in sustainability certification processes, performance monitoring, and compliance verification.
- Thorough understanding of energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management, and carbon reduction strategies.
- Familiarity with Saudi building regulations, sustainability requirements, and international sustainability frameworks.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, sustainability reporting tools, and data analysis software.
