Job Purpose

The Speed Boat Captain is responsible for the safe navigation, operation, and maintenance of project speed boats used to support beach restoration, marine dredging, shoreline rehabilitation, hydrographic surveys, personnel transportation, equipment logistics, emergency response, and offshore operations throughout the Red Sea Global project sites.

The Speed Boat Captain shall ensure the safe transportation of personnel, equipment, and materials between islands, work fronts, jetties, barges, and marine facilities while maintaining full compliance with Saudi Arabian maritime regulations, Red Sea Global Marine Safety Standards, and Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) requirements.

Works Closely With: Inflatable Boat Operators, Divers, Surveyors, Dredging Machine Operators, Suction Pump Operators, Heavy Machinery Drivers, QHSE Officer, Marine Crew and Client Representatives

Job Responsibilities

The Speed Boat Captain shall be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

Marine Vessel Operations

  • Safely operate and navigate project speed boats in coastal, lagoon, intertidal, and offshore waters.
  • Transport project personnel, contractors, consultants, and visitors between project locations.
  • Support beach restoration, dredging, shoreline rehabilitation, and marine maintenance activities.
  • Assist marine construction teams with equipment and material transportation.
  • Support hydrographic survey operations by transporting survey personnel and equipment.
  • Provide marine support for diving operations and underwater inspections.
  • Assist with deployment and recovery of buoys, anchors, floating pipelines, mooring systems, and dredging equipment.
  • Maintain safe positioning of the vessel during diving, survey, and marine operations.
  • Operate vessels in accordance with approved marine operating procedures.

Navigation & Seamanship

  • Navigate using GPS, nautical charts, electronic navigation systems, compass, and local marine knowledge.
  • Monitor tides, weather forecasts, sea conditions, currents, and visibility before departure.
  • Plan safe routes to project locations while avoiding navigational hazards.
  • Conduct safe berthing, docking, anchoring, mooring, and launching operations.
  • Maintain safe vessel speeds and separation distances.
  • Ensure compliance with international and local collision avoidance regulations.
  • Maintain effective communication with marine control and operational teams using VHF radio.
  • Maintain situational awareness during all vessel movements.

Passenger & Cargo Management

  • Verify passenger manifests before departure.
  • Ensure safe embarkation and disembarkation of personnel.
  • Secure cargo, equipment, tools, and materials before sailing.
  • Ensure vessel loading does not exceed approved capacity.
  • Verify that all passengers wear approved Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs).
  • Deliver personnel and equipment safely and on schedule.

Vessel Inspection & Maintenance

  • Conduct daily pre-departure inspections of the vessel.
  • Inspect engines, steering systems, fuel systems, batteries, navigation equipment, communication systems, navigation lights, bilge pumps, and safety equipment.
  • Maintain outboard or inboard engines in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
  • Monitor fuel levels and engine performance.
  • Perform routine cleaning and housekeeping of the vessel.
  • Maintain vessel logbooks and maintenance records.
  • Report defects and coordinate repairs with the Workshop Supervisor.

Marine Logistics Support

  • Transport project materials, tools, spare parts, fuel, and consumables.
  • Support mobilization and demobilization of marine equipment.
  • Assist with towing small vessels, floating platforms, and equipment when authorized.
  • Coordinate with Inflatable Boat Operators during marine logistics activities.
  • Provide logistical support for remote island operations.

Emergency Response

  • Act as the first responder during marine emergencies.
  • Conduct man-overboard rescue procedures.
  • Participate in search and rescue operations.
  • Provide emergency evacuation of injured personnel when required.
  • Ensure emergency equipment remains operational and readily available.
  • Assist during oil spill response and environmental emergencies.
  • Coordinate emergency communications with project management and relevant authorities.

Health, Safety & Environmental Responsibilities

  • Comply with all company marine safety procedures and HSE requirements.
  • Conduct vessel-specific risk assessments before operations.
  • Participate in daily toolbox talks and safety meetings.
  • Ensure safe refueling practices and spill prevention measures.
  • Protect coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, and environmentally sensitive marine habitats.
  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses, and environmental concerns immediately.
  • Maintain good housekeeping on board the vessel.
  • Ensure compliance with marine permits and environmental regulations.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain daily vessel logbooks.
  • Record engine operating hours, fuel consumption, and maintenance activities.
  • Complete vessel inspection checklists.
  • Maintain passenger and cargo manifests.
  • Record weather, tide, and sea conditions.
  • Report operational issues, equipment defects, and incidents.
  • Submit daily operational reports to the Marine Supervisor.

Qualification and Experience

Education Qualification

Mandatory

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred

  • Diploma or Certificate in Nautical Science, Maritime Studies, Seamanship, Marine Operations, or a related discipline.

Licenses Required

  • Valid Commercial Boat Captain License or Coastal Skipper Certificate recognized by the relevant maritime authority.
  • Valid STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) Certification.
  • Marine VHF Radio Operator Certificate.
  • Valid First Aid & CPR Certification.
  • Company HSE Induction Certificate.

5. Experience

  • Minimum 58 years of experience operating speed boats or commercial small craft in marine or offshore environments.
  • Proven experience supporting marine construction, beach restoration, dredging, offshore, coastal engineering, or island development projects.
  • Experience operating vessels in shallow-water, lagoons, intertidal areas, and coastal environments.
  • Experience transporting personnel and equipment safely under varying sea conditions.
  • Experience supporting diving operations, hydrographic surveys, and marine logistics.
  • GCC or Middle East marine project experience is highly preferred.
  • Previous experience in environmentally sensitive marine environments is an advantage.

Job Context

Candidates with previous experience in marine construction, beach restoration, dredging, coastal engineering, offshore support, ports, harbors, island developments, marine logistics, or environmental, marine operations will be given preference. Experience operating commercial speed boats in support of hydrographic surveys, diving operations, dredging activities, shoreline rehabilitation, personnel transfer, and emergency response within coastal, lagoon, and intertidal environments is highly desirable.

Previous experience on Red Sea Global, NEOM, AMAALA, Saudi Aramco, or other major GCC marine and coastal infrastructure projects will be considered a significant advantage.
