Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Draw blood and collect specimens via venipuncture or finger/heel sticks.
  • Maintain specimen integrity with aseptic technique and disinfection.
  • Explain procedures to patients before collection.
  • Label and track specimens with dates and times in the logbook.
  • Notify physicians of results outside normal ranges.
  • Sort and deliver samples to appropriate sections.
  • Attend CME units and training to improve phlebotomy risk awareness.
  • Ensure a safe, compliant work environment.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Verifies patient by following the policy for patient identification at least two identifiers name and medical record number.
  • Verifies test requisitions by comparing tests requisition receipt and requisition in the system bringing attention for any discrepancies.
  • Verifies the patient preparations and patient requirements for each laboratory tests.
  • Explains the procedure to the patient before drawing the blood.
  • Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures, finger sticks and heel stick.
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following best practice disinfection.
  • Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring assays by collaborating with nursing personnel or with the patient to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time.
  • Tracks collected specimens by properly putting barcodes with information of date, times of collection and maintaining daily tallies of collections performed in logbook.
  • Performs bleeding-times tests and clotting time tests by properly doing the procedures and entering results to the computer; notifying nurses of physicians of results falling outside normal ranges.
  • Can sort all the biological samples such as blood, urine, stool, sputum, tissues and body fluids to which sections it could be deliver and accepted.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Resolving unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders and oriented to do OVR.
  • Improve knowledge and awareness of risk associated with phlebotomy by attending CME units, workshop, passing media lab courses and other educational activities.
Skills & Abilities

Highly motivated, documentation skills with attention to details, with computer skills, a team player and has skills in interpersonal dealing with variety of patients.

Desired Candidate Profile

Experience: 0 2 years of experience as Laboratory Phlebotomist.

Education: Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. Certified phlebotomist, specialized in the collection of blood specimen in all age group.

Language: Excellent in English and Arabic languages (verbal & writing).

Licenses / Certifications: License for practice as per the regional health regulatory authority e.g. (SCFHS / DHA).
