Job Description

Department: Business Development - Engineering

Experience Required: Minimum 7 to 12 Years (Early Career: Technical Engineering | Later: Business Development & Sales)

Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mandatory); MBA or Master's Preferred

The Business Development Manager (BDM) at an engineering company is a rare hybrid professional - one who combines a solid engineering foundation with advanced commercial acumen and strategic sales leadership. This is not a conventional sales role; it is a technically informed growth mandate that requires the candidate to speak the language of engineers, understand the complexity of engineering deliverables, and translate that understanding into compelling value propositions for clients operating in demanding industrial and infrastructure environments.

The candidate is expected to have spent their early career years (approximately 0–7 years) in technical and field engineering roles, developing a thorough understanding of how engineering projects are designed, executed, and delivered. In their later career years (7–12 years), the candidate should have progressively transitioned into customer-facing, sales, and business development roles - actively winning engineering contracts, managing key accounts, and building the commercial pipeline.

The ultimate purpose of this role is to grow the company's engineering revenue, expand its client base across key industrial sectors, and position the organization as the partner of choice for engineering services - whether EPC, consultancy, inspection, design, or specialized technical solutions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Business Development Strategy & Market Expansion

Drive the engineering firm’s growth agenda by identifying, pursuing, and securing new engineering business opportunities:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive business development strategy aligned with the company's engineering service lines, target sectors, and growth ambitions.
  • Identify and evaluate new market opportunities across sectors including real estate development, urban development, Project Management Team, Oil & Gas, Infrastructure, Power & Utilities, Industrial Manufacturing, Water Treatment, and Construction.
  • Conduct structured market intelligence - analysing competitor positioning, client spending plans, regulatory shifts, and upcoming project pipelines to prioritize BD efforts.
  • Map out key decision-makers (Technical Directors, Project Managers, Procurement Heads, C-Suite) within target client organizations and develop strategic engagement plans.
  • Lead geographic or sector expansion initiatives, including entry into new regions, countries, or project types aligned with the company's engineering capabilities.
Requirements
Educational Background

The following academic credentials are required or preferred:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering - Mandatory. Accepted disciplines include: Architectural engineering or any equivalent discipline
  • Master's in Business Administration (MBA), Engineering Management, or Commercial Management - Preferred.
Professional Experience

Minimum 7 to 12 years of total professional experience is required.

The first 3–5 years must demonstrate active technical engineering experience in roles such as:

  • Site/Project Architect, Design Engineer, Architectural Engineer, BIM Coordinator, or Project Engineer
  • Direct involvement in architectural and engineering project delivery - including design development, documentation, coordination, and site supervision - not purely administrative or support roles

The subsequent years (from year 4–5 onward) must show a clear transition into:

  • Technical sales, bid management, or business development within an architectural, engineering consultancy, or design-build firm
Technical Engineering Skills

These are foundational technical competencies developed during the early career phase:

  • Ability to read, interpret, and critically review architectural drawings, structural and MEP layouts, sections and elevations, finishing schedules, shop drawings, and BOQs.
  • Proficiency in core design and documentation software:
    • BIM & CAD: Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, Navisworks (clash detection and 4D coordination)
    • 3D Modeling: SketchUp, Rhino with Grasshopper for parametric design
  • Working knowledge of architectural project phases - concept design, schematic design, design development, construction documentation, tendering, construction administration, and project handover.
  • Familiarity with architectural and engineering codes and standards applicable to the company's service domain, including:
    • Saudi Building Code (SBC), IBC, ASHRAE, NFPA, ADA / Universal Accessibility standards
    • Sustainability frameworks such as LEED, Mostadam, and WELL
    • Local municipality and authority requirements (e.g., Baladiya, Civil Defense, MoMRA)
  • Understanding of cost estimation and project controls software:
    • Scheduling: Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, Synchro (for 4D BIM scheduling)
