The Audiology Technician plays a vital role in supporting audiologists and other healthcare professionals in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with hearing and balance disorders. This position requires specialized knowledge of audiology procedures, technical competence, strong communication skills, and a patient-centred approach to care.
Patient Care:
- Conduct and assist with audiological diagnostic procedures such as pure-tone audiometry, tympanometry, otoacoustic emissions (OAE), hearing screenings, speech audiometry, and other audiological assessments according to established protocols.
- Prepare patients for hearing assessments, explain testing procedures, and ensure patient comfort and cooperation.
- Assist audiologists during specialized assessments and hearing aid evaluations.
- Ensure proper patient positioning and testing environment.
Patient Education and Support:
- Assess patient educational needs and coordinate with relevant departments as needed.
- Educate patients and families regarding hearing disorders, diagnostic procedures, hearing conservation, hearing aids, and treatment plans as directed by the audiologist.
- Provide emotional support and reassurance throughout the patient journey.
- Ensure patients understand follow-up instructions and recommendations
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate closely with physicians, nurses, speech therapists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
- Maintain effective communication with team members regarding patient status, test results, and service requirements.
- Facilitate smooth patient flow and continuity of care.
Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Accurately document audiological test results, patient information, interventions, and observations within Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
- Maintain complete and accurate audiology records.
- Ensure compliance with documentation standards, legal requirements, and departmental policies.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
Safety and Infection Control Quality Improvement and Compliance:
- Ensure audiology equipment is cleaned, calibrated, maintained, and ready for use according to manufacturer recommendations and departmental standards.
- Adhere to infection prevention and control standards.
- Identify and report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and environmental hazards
- Comply with organizational policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs
- Assist supervisors with additional work-related responsibilities within scope of practice.
Professional Development:
- Stay current with advances in audiology technology, hearing assessment techniques, hearing devices, and patient care practices.
- Participate in continuing education, workshops, seminars, and professional development activities.
- Demonstrate and maintain competence in all mandatory competencies.
- Maintain current licensure, certifications, and professional requirements for the position.
