Nimber in Alfragide, Portugal, is hiring two Senior Java Backend Developers for a hybrid role. You will craft scalable microservices and cloud-native solutions, focusing on performance, reliability and secure design in a payments technology environment.

The role requires strong Java and Spring Boot experience, with a deep understanding of distributed systems, REST APIs and modern DevOps practices. Onsite attendance in Alfragide is required, and relocation is not offered.

Qualificações

• A university degree.
• Solid professional experience with Java, including concurrency and memory management.

• Understanding of distributed architectures and synchronous vs asynchronous communication.
• Experience designing REST APIs.
• Knowledge of failure-handling and resilience strategies (retries, circuit breakers, fallbacks, idempotency).
• Professional experience with microservices and containerisation (Kubernetes and OpenShift).
• Experience with Git, CI/CD, DevSecOps and code reviews.
• Automated testing with JUnit, Mockito and Testcontainers.
• Availability to work in a hybrid model with onsite attendance in Alfragide.
• Current residence in Portugal; applications from abroad not considered.

Responsabilidades

• Build cloud-native and cloud-agnostic solutions, improving performance, resilience, latency and scalability for high transaction volumes.
• Write unit, integration and contract tests, and assist QA with test automation.
• Contribute to technical design in collaboration with architects.
• Collaborate with Architecture, QA, SRE, Security and Business teams during refinements and code reviews.
• Ensure services are secure and observable by design with proper logging and metrics.
• Produce and maintain technical docs covering services, APIs and decisions.
• Investigate incidents in development and QA environments including on-call analysis.

This is a hybrid position based in Alfragide, Portugal, with regular onsite attendance required.

Due to the urgency of this recruitment process, we will only consider professionals who are already living in Portugal at the time of application.

Candidates currently living outside Portugal will not be considered — including candidates who are planning, willing or preparing to relocate. This is not a remote-from-abroad opportunity.

We are looking for two Senior Java Backend Developers to support and help build and evolve cloud-native, mission-critical payment technology.

This is a hands-on backend opportunity for someone who enjoys well-designed distributed systems, secure and observable code, and engineering challenges where performance and reliability genuinely matter.

What you will do

• Develop and maintain microservices, REST APIs and business logic using Java and Spring Boot.
• Build cloud-native and cloud-agnostic solutions, continuously improving their performance, resilience, latency and ability to handle high transaction volumes.
• Write unit, integration and contract tests, while supporting the QA team with test automation.
• Participate in the technical design of solutions alongside architects and in line with the established architecture.
• Collaborate closely with Architecture, QA, SRE, Security and Business teams during refinements, planning sessions and code reviews.
• Help ensure that services are secure and observable by design, using appropriate logging, distributed tracing and metrics.
• Produce and maintain technical documentation covering services, APIs and relevant technical decisions.
• Investigate incidents and technical problems in development and QA/certification environments, including third-line analysis and resolution.

Mandatory requirements

• A university degree.
• Solid professional experience with Java, including a strong understanding of concurrency and memory management.
• Professional experience with Spring Boot.
• A good understanding of distributed architectures and synchronous versus asynchronous communication patterns.
• Strong experience designing and working with REST APIs.
• Knowledge of failure-handling and resilience strategies, including retries, circuit breakers, fallbacks and idempotency.
• Professional experience with microservices and containerisation, including Kubernetes and OpenShift.
• Experience with modern software-development practices and tools, including Git, CI/CD, DevSecOps and code reviews.
• Automated testing experience with technologies such as JUnit, Mockito and Testcontainers.
• Availability to work in a hybrid model with onsite attendance in Alfragide.
• Current residence in Portugal. Applications from candidates currently based abroad cannot be considered.

Desirable experience

• Spring Cloud and the wider Spring ecosystem.
• Cloud-native environments, Docker or Podman, Kubernetes and 12-factor applications.
• High-throughput, low-latency systems.
• Distributed and event-driven architectures.
• Geo-distributed, relational, NoSQL or NewSQL databases, including technologies such as MongoDB or CockroachDB.
• Legacy-to-cloud-native migration programmes.
• Observability and SRE practices, including centralised logging, metrics and distributed tracing.
• Payment solutions, instant payments or other mission-critical financial systems.
• Payment standards and formats such as ISO 20022 and SEPA Instant.
