Job summary

ALTEN Portugal is seeking a hands-on PLC Automation / Commissioning Engineer to join a dynamic team. You will develop and program PLC software for industrial automation systems and work with Siemens PLCs using the TIA Portal, including SCL programming.

You will support commissioning, startup, and validation of machines at customer sites and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across project phases. Ideal candidates have hands-on experience in industrial automation, strong troubleshooting

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and program PLC software for industrial automation systems, ensuring reliable and efficient machine operation.
• Work with Siemens PLCs and TIA Portal, including the development of software using SCL (Structured Control Language / Structured Text).
• Perform software testing, debugging, and optimization activities to ensure system performance and operational stability.
• Support the commissioning, startup, and validation of machines and automation systems at customer sites.
• Identify, analyze, and resolve technical issues during commissioning activities, implementing software adjustments when required.
• Participate in factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT), ensuring compliance with project specifications and customer requirements.
• Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout all project phases, from development to deployment.
• Provide technical support during installation and startup activities, ensuring successful project delivery.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to optimize automation processes and system performance.
• Ensure compliance with company procedures, quality standards, and health and safety requirements during all project activities.

Requirements:

• Professional experience in PLC programming and industrial automation.
• Hands-on experience with Siemens PLCs and TIA Portal.
• Knowledge of SCL / Structured Text programming.
• Previous experience in commissioning, machine startup, or industrial automation projects is highly valued.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Good communication skills and a professional level of English.
• Availability for frequent international travel is essential.
• Until the end of the year: approximately 3 weeks abroad (UK or other European locations) followed by 1 week in Portugal.
• January and February: activities are expected to be mainly based in Portugal.
• From spring onwards: the international commissioning model is expected to resume, with periods abroad followed by time in Portugal.
