Job summary

act digital is seeking a C++ Software Engineer to evolve a long-lived desktop application built with C++20 and Qt. You will design maintainable components, improve stability, and contribute to a quality, well-tested codebase in a hybrid work setup in Coimbra.

You will work on Linux development, CMake builds, unit tests with Catch2 or Google Test, and collaborate via Git. The role rewards thoughtful ownership, careful refactoring, and clear English communication.

Qualifications

• Professional experience developing software in C++.
• Knowledge of modern C++ design principles, including resource ownership, move semantics, const-correctness, and effective use of the Standard Library.
• Experience creating maintainable, testable code and designing software components, APIs, or architecture.
• Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience with automated unit testing frameworks such as Catch2, Google Test, Boost.Test, or equivalent.
• Experience with Linux development, Git workflows, and CMake.
• Experience working with large, established or legacy codebases while maintaining product stability.
• Confidence communicating technical concepts in English, both written and spoken.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement maintainable software components, APIs, and system architecture.
• Develop and debug applications on Linux, using the command line and common development tools.
• Maintain and improve CMake-based builds.
• Write and maintain automated unit tests.
• Participate in Git-based collaboration and constructive code reviews.
• Work pragmatically in a large, long-lived codebase, improving quality without unnecessary rewrites.
• Investigate complex technical problems and drive them through to resolution.
