Job summary

Valvian, a Lisbon-based biotechnology company, seeks the first scientist in its Computational Biology & AI function to build the data substrate for predictive AI models in oncology and age-related disorders.

You’ll architect data models, ingest diverse experimental and public data, and design pipelines to ensure traceability, uncertainty handling, and reproducible results across cross‑functional teams.

Qualifications

• Three to six years in computational biology, bioinformatics, proteomics, structural biology or related quantitative field.
• A PhD or strong hands‑on experience are preferred.
• Strong Python: modules, tests, version control, code others can run later.
• SQL, R and workflow tools such as Nextflow, Snakemake or Airflow are useful here.
• Something you built that others have used: a pipeline, a database, a process, a tool.
• Strong experience in LLMs and agentic systems in scientific work.

Responsibilities

• Take raw messy data through to something usable: ingestion, cleaning, structuring, and the judgement calls.
• Build and maintain pipelines and tools with version control, environment management, reproducibility and testing.
• Work in modern cloud infrastructure with GDPR compliance and data sovereignty from day one.
• Design the data model for evidence: entities, relationships, vocabularies and confidence scales.
• Integrate heterogeneous data preserving context, provenance and uncertainty.
