Job summary

Valvian, a Lisbon-based biotech startup, seeks a founding Computational Biologist to architect the data substrate for a cutting-edge AI platform. You will define data models, provenance, and uncertainty representations while building pipelines and validation workflows in collaboration with bench scientists.

The role is broad by design, spanning data foundations, evidence curation and agentic automation; you will shape how experiments and predictive models interact with data from day one.

Qualifications

• Three to six years in computational biology or related quantitative field; PhD or strong hands-on experience preferred.
• Experience taking raw biological data through a working analysis or tool end-to-end with robust results.
• Strong Python; experience with SQL and workflow tools like Nextflow, Snakemake or Airflow.
• Built pipelines, databases or data ingestion/ harmonization processes used by others.
• Knowledge of LLMs and agentic systems in scientific work.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement the data model that holds evidence, entities, relationships and confidence scales.
• Build pipelines and tools with version control and reproducibility from day one.
• Work in cloud infrastructure with GDPR compliance and data sovereignty in mind.
• Collaborate with lab scientists to translate computational findings into experiments and guidance.
