Ashby seeks a Design Engineer to blend UX/UI with engineering, contributing to a growing team and a scalable Design System. You will ship product changes from day one, pairing with peers to learn, contribute, and implement design-driven features for our Talent Acquisition software.

You will collaborate with Product Engineers to enhance information hierarchy, wireframe new flows, and deliver reusable components across the Design System, enabling rapid, consistent UI across hundreds of users.

Qualificações

  • Proficiency in TypeScript, React, and CSS.

  • Proficiency with backend technologies is a plus.

About the Role

This role combines both design and engineering. The role embraces the intersection of both, where the UX and UI envisioned can influence the data model's design and flexibility, and an understanding of technology's capabilities can simplify or improve the design.

The role works closely with the VP of Engineering and is part of a department that is doubling from five to over ten members in the next year.

At Ashby, your work will touch over 100,000 weekly active users and millions of candidates per week, serving notable customers like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake.

What We’re Building

Ashby is building Talent Acquisition software designed to provide the highest standard of tooling The goal is to build intelligent, powerful software that provides insights and automates or simplifies tasks for recruiting teams, such as scheduling, tracking interviewer preparation, and managing interview loads.

Your First Three Months at Ashby
  • Your dev environment is set up with a single script.
  • You will push your first product change on day one.
  • You will spend your time shipping product changes that provide a tour of the codebase and best practices, with the scope increasing from simple copy changes to the delivery of impactful features.
  • Your manager will conduct 30, 60, and 90-day reviews to provide feedback and calibrate.
  • You will be paired with a peer to answer questions, pair program, and check in often.
  • The team will run training sessions on culture, product, engineering process, and technical architecture.
What You’ll Be Doing
  • Working on challenging design problems.
  • Expanding and enhancing the in-house Design System.
  • Consulting on bespoke design work needed by Product Engineers.
  • Redesigning the mobile web app by talking with customers, wireframing new flows, and implementing the Design System to make wireframes a reality.

  • Helping Product Engineers improve information hierarchy and scannability for features like candidate assessments.
Seniority Levels
  • Junior Design Engineer: No more than 2 years of industry experience as a designer or engineer, with personal or professional projects involving at least a couple of users that showcase visual taste and talent in both UI/UX and engineering.
  • Design Engineer (Mid and Senior): 2+ years of continuous experience (internships do not count) as an Engineer or a Designer, with good proficiency in both Design and Engineering and exceptional proficiency in your full-time discipline. Includes experience designing products and shipping code to hundreds of users.
  • Staff Design Engineer: Professional experience in Design Engineering, including major contributions to a Design System and the design and implementation of features for hundreds of users iterated on through user feedback.
Technical Stack & Skills
  • Proficiency in TypeScript, React, and CSS.
  • Familiarity with GraphQL, Node.js, Postgres, and Redis.
  • Proficiency with backend technologies is a plus.
Workflow & Mindset
  • Ability to work on various responsibilities beyond just Design Systems.
  • Ability to build conviction by shipping to a subset of users and gathering feedback rather than relying solely on extensive research and user testing.
  • Comfort with fast shipping and iterating over time based on user feedback and business needs rather than seeking perfection before release.
  • Excellent taste and execution in visual design.
  • Ability to work with minimal process and high ownership, running projects end-to-end by researching problems, writing product specs, building wireframes, and implementing solutions.
  • Willingness to handle customer issues and investigations.

Interview Process

There are no Leetcode or whiteboard exercises. The process consists of three rounds:

  1. Introduction call with the VP of Engineering (30m, live). Be prepared to screen-share examples of your work.
  2. A second round consisting of either a technical screen (1h, live) or a design take-home (~3h async, 30m live).
  3. Three interviews (3h, live) including a deep dive into a past Design System or design project, a Design System interview, and the remaining component from the second round (technical screen or design take-home).
Engineering Culture

  • Use of AI-powered tooling (with an unlimited token budget) to automate mundane tasks, suggest fixes, prototype ideas, and conduct code reviews.
  • A core set of building blocks, including analytics modeling, query language, policy engine, workflow engine, and Design Systems.
