Job summary

Next Engineering is seeking a senior backend engineer in Portugal to drive cloud-native microservices and scalable architectures. You will work on distributed systems, APIs, asynchronous processing and event-driven designs, ensuring secure and reusable software across enterprise integrations.

The role emphasizes collaboration with AI engineers, product managers and platform engineers on cutting-edge projects. Remote work is possible with competitive compensation.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of backend development experience.
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems and APIs.
• Experience building cloud-native apps and microservices.
• Experience integrating enterprise apps via REST APIs and messaging.
• Strong software design for maintainability and resilience.
• Expertise in workflow state, long-running processes, retries and fault recovery.
• Knowledge of authentication, authorization and API security.
• Ability to work in cross-functional teams including AI engineers and product managers.
• Experience with AI-assisted engineering tools is a plus.

• Experience with backend development following modern software engineering practices;

• Track record of integrating enterprise applications via REST APIs, messaging platforms, and event-based architectures;
• Strong software design skills with an emphasis on maintainability, resilience, and reusable architecture;
• Expertise in systems managing workflow state, long-running processes, retries, and fault recovery;
• Knowledge of authentication, authorization, API security, and secure software development;
• Comfortable working in cross-functional teams with AI engineers, product managers, platform engineers, and domain specialists;
• Experience with AI-assisted engineering tools to improve software delivery is a strong plus.
