Job summary
As an Underwriting Trainee in the home lending underwriting team, you will complete a structured six-month training curriculum focused on agency (conforming) or home equity underwriting, based on business assignment. You will develop foundational knowledge in credit risk, income and asset analysis, credit and collateral review, documentation standards, fair lending practices, and applicable regulatory requirements. Progression to a Credit Underwriter role is contingent on successful completion of all program requirements, including attendance, assigned learning and test cases, performance and conduct expectations, and the applicable lending authority assessment. Successful completion of the program does not automatically guarantee progression.
Job responsibilities
- Participate in all required training sessions and learning activities throughout the six-month program
- Complete assigned modules covering products, credit analysis, income calculation, asset review, credit reports, debt obligations, and collateral documentation
- Perform knowledge checks, practical exercises, simulations, and underwriting test cases within established timelines
- Review borrower and property documentation under supervision, including income, employment, assets, liabilities, credit, appraisal, title, and related information
- Identify documentation gaps, inconsistencies, risk indicators, and required underwriting conditions with guidance
- Apply underwriting guidelines and escalation procedures accurately under supervision
- Use underwriting systems and tools, including automated decisioning systems (where applicable) and spreadsheet-based calculators
- Participate in coaching sessions, calibration activities, and readiness reviews to support continuous improvement
- Maintain attendance, professionalism, training engagement, and quality standards throughout the program
- Protect customer information and follow applicable conduct, compliance, privacy, and fair lending requirements
- Complete the applicable lending authority assessment required to be considered for progression to the Credit Underwriter role
Required qualifications, capabilities and skills
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field (for external applicants)
- Willingness and ability to complete the full six-month training program, including required attendance, learning modules, and test cases
- Demonstrated analytical aptitude and ability to interpret financial and credit-related information
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on documentation quality and accuracy
- Ability to learn and apply complex policies, guidelines, and regulatory requirements in a structured environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and willingness to learn underwriting systems and tools
- Ability to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and maintain accountability for assigned work
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a structured, fast-paced learning environment
- Amenable to working night shifts aligned with U.S. business hours and to a hybrid or onsite work arrangement based on business needs
Preferred qualifications, capabilities and skills
- Foundational knowledge of residential mortgage concepts, credit risk, or consumer lending
- Experience (internship, school projects, or work experience) involving financial analysis, documentation review, or quality-focused processes
- Experience in financial services operations, customer service, quality review, or a related function
- Demonstrated ability to receive coaching, apply feedback, and show measurable improvement over time
- Familiarity with fair lending principles and a commitment to consistent, unbiased decisioning
- Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment when reviewing information and identifying risk indicators
