Job summary

Capgemini is seeking an experienced API Designer to design, model, and govern banking APIs across channels and ecosystems. You will translate business requirements into reusable, secure API specifications and lead API design quality in line with enterprise standards.

You will define resources, specifications, and validation rules, and collaborate with Product Owners, Architects, and QA to ensure scalable, observable APIs that support API-as-a-Product initiatives.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in API design, solution design, or integration development.
• Experience in Financial Services industry.

Your Role

The API Designer is responsible for designing, modeling, and governing business APIs that enable digital banking capabilities across channels, products, and partner ecosystems. The role works closely with Business Analysts, Domain Architects, Product Owners, Enterprise Architects, and development teams to translate banking business requirements into reusable, secure, and standards-compliant API specifications.

The API Designer acts as the custodian of API design quality, ensuring alignment with BIAN service domains, domain-driven design (DDD) principles, API lifecycle governance, and enterprise integration standards. The role is critical in enabling an API-as-a-Product operating model and driving consistency, reuse, and interoperability across the banking API ecosystem.

API Analysis and Design

• Analyze business and functional requirements to identify API capabilities and service interactions.
• Lead the end-to-end technical design of APIs and integration solutions.
• Design RESTful APIs and integration services using API-first and contract-first methodologies.
• Create and maintain API specifications using OpenAPI (Swagger) standards.
• Define API resources, operations, request/response models, validation rules, and error handling frameworks.
• Ensure API designs are scalable, reusable, maintainable, and aligned with enterprise architecture standards.

API Specification & Documentation

• Develop complete API design artifacts and technical specifications.
• Produce OpenAPI definitions, sequence flows, mapping documents, and integration specifications.
• Document security, performance, and non-functional requirements.
• Maintain API documentation and ensure alignment with API catalog and repository standards.

Collaboration with Delivery Teams

• Work closely with Product Owners and Business Analysts to refine requirements and user stories.
• Collaborate with Architects and Technical Leads to define solution designs and integration patterns.
• Support Developers during implementation and provide clarification on API contracts and design decisions.
• Partner with QA teams to define API testing requirements and acceptance criteria.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog refinement, reviews, and retrospectives.

API Governance & Standards

• Ensure compliance with enterprise API governance standards and design guidelines.
• Apply API versioning, naming conventions, lifecycle management, and documentation standards.
• Participate in architecture and design review processes.
• Promote API reuse and prevent duplication of capabilities across delivery squads.
• Support API catalog management and service discoverability initiatives.

Quality & Security Assurance

• Define authentication, authorization, encryption, and data protection requirements.
• Review API designs for performance, scalability, resiliency, and operational supportability.
• Support implementation of observability, logging, and monitoring requirements.
• Drive adoption of API best practices and industry standards.
• Identify opportunities to improve API design accelerators, templates, and reusable assets.
• Contribute to API communities of practice and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
• Support modernization and API productization initiatives across the organization.

Your Profile

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or a related discipline.

Experience

• 7+ years of experience in API design, solution design, or integration development.
• Experience working in Financial Services industry.
• Experience working within Agile/Scrum delivery teams.
• Experience delivering integration and API initiatives across enterprise environments.
• Strong understanding of software development lifecycle and API delivery processes.
