Job summary

IDEA Services in Gisborne is seeking a dedicated Support Worker to help people with intellectual disabilities live meaningful lives at home and in the community.

You will support daily living skills, transport arrangements, social activities and health appointments, with wage progression tied to NZCHW qualifications. The role includes sleepover shifts and is based in Gisborne.

Qualifications

• NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing Level 3 or recognised equivalent with 3 years relevant health-sector experience.
• NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing Level 4 or recognised equivalent with progression opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Support people to grow independence and learn daily living skills (e.g. using public transport, budgeting, cooking).
• Assist with daily activities including shopping, cleaning, showering and appointments.
• Engage individuals in activities and hobbies and support community participation.
• Drive IDEA vehicles to transport people to community locations.
• Recognise emotional distress and respond safely while promoting wellbeing.
• Support goal setting and decision making for individuals.

Job description

• $24.68 - $30.13 per hour depending on relevant qualifications, with the ability to earn more as you gain qualifications.
• Minimum of 60 guaranteed hours per fortnight, overtime is available.
• There is also opportunity to perform up to 6 sleepover shifts of up to 10 hours' duration per fortnight (paid at prevailing minimum wage).

As a Support Worker you will be supporting people with intellectual disabilities to enjoy great lives at home and as part of their community. This is meaningful work where you can be creative and make every day interesting in ways that are important to others.

The position will be based in Gisborne. The position will be aligned to the relevant Area Office reporting to the relevant Service Manager. Your specific locations of work within the area would be as directed by your Service Manger within the Region.

What does the job involve?

• Supporting people to grow their independence and learn skills for daily living (e.g. using public transport, getting a job, manage money, cook a meal).
• Supporting people with their individual needs and daily activities such as shopping, cleaning, showering and any medical appointments or medicine administering.
• Helping people with their interests and hobbies (e.g. going to the park or beach, participating in sport, doing art and crafts).
• Driving IDEA vehicles to transport people to places in the community.
• Support people to recognise and respond to emotional overwhelm and react safely.
• Supporting them to plan and achieve their goals and make decisions and choices.
• Making sure they can have strong connections with their whānau and community.
• Helping them stay healthy and make positive choices about their lifestyle.

• Pay rate is based on NZ Certificates in Health and Wellbeing or a recognised equivalent qualification with a clear salary progression as you learn:
• - NZCHW Level 2 or equivalent $25.65
• - NZCHW Level 3 or equivalent $27.89
• - NZCHW Level 4 or equivalent $30.13
• IDEA Services will support you towards completion of the Level 2, 3 and 4 Certificates in Health and Wellbeing qualifications.
