Job summary

IDEA Services is seeking a dedicated Support Worker in Gisborne to assist people with intellectual disabilities to lead meaningful lives at home and in the community. Your role includes promoting independence, daily living skills, and safe access to services, with a focus on person-centered support.

Based in Gisborne, you will report to the Service Manager and work within the region as directed, including sleepovers and varied rosters. A health/welfare certificate pathway supports progression.

Qualifications

• NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing Level 3 or 4 preferred.
• Flexible to work rostered shifts including days, evenings, sleepovers and weekends.
• Full NZ driver licence is required.

Responsibilities

• Support people to grow independence and learn daily living skills.
• Assist with shopping, cleaning, showering and medicines as needed.
• Support interests and hobbies in community settings.
• Transport people in IDEA vehicles to activities.
• Support emotional wellbeing and safe decision-making.
• Help plan and achieve goals and maintain connections with whānau and community.

Job description

• $24.68 - $30.13 per hour depending on relevant qualifications, with the ability to earn more as you gain qualifications.
• Minimum of 60 guaranteed hours per fortnight, overtime is available.
• There is also opportunity to perform up to 6 sleepover shifts of up to 10 hours' duration per fortnight (paid at prevailing minimum wage).

About the role | Mō te tūnga

As a Support Worker you will be supporting people with intellectual disabilities to enjoy great lives at home and as part of their community. This is meaningful work where you can be creative and make every day interesting in ways that are important to others.

The position will be based in Gisborne. The position will be aligned to the relevant Area Office reporting to the relevant Service Manager. Your specific locations of work within the area would be as directed by your Service Manger within the Region.

What does the job involve?

• Supporting people to grow their independence and learn skills for daily living (e.g. using public transport, getting a job, manage money, cook a meal).
• Supporting people with their individual needs and daily activities such as shopping, cleaning, showering and any medical appointments or medicine administering.
• Helping people with their interests and hobbies (e.g. going to the park or beach, participating in sport, doing art and crafts).
• Driving IDEA vehicles to transport people to places in the community.
• Support people to recognise and respond to emotional overwhelm and react safely.
• Supporting them to plan and achieve their goals and make decisions and choices.
• Making sure they can have strong connections with their whānau and community.
• Helping them stay healthy and make positive choices about their lifestyle.

• Pay rate is based on NZ Certificates in Health and Wellbeing or a recognised equivalent qualification with a clear salary progression as you learn:
• - No relevant qualification $24.68
• - NZCHW Level 2 or equivalent $25.65
• - NZCHW Level 3 or equivalent $27.89
• - NZCHW Level 4 or equivalent $30.13
• IDEA Services will support you towards completion of the Level 2, 3 and 4 Certificates in Health and Wellbeing qualifications.
