As a Positive Behaviour Support Planner, you will work alongside disabled people, their whānau, support networks, kaimahi, and other professionals to develop and implement positive behaviour support approaches that improve quality of life and reduce behaviours of concern.
This is a part-time, fixed-term maternity leave cover position based in Mount Wellington, supporting services across the wider Auckland region. The role is primarily Monday to Friday during office hours, with a combination of community, residential, and office-based work.
You will work as part of a geographically dispersed team, requiring confidence working independently while maintaining regular communication and collaboration with colleagues across the wider region.
Key responsibilities
- Be responsible for developing and supporting positive behaviour approaches that strengthen independence, safety, participation, and overall quality of life.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting functional behaviour assessments to identify the purpose, triggers, and contributing factors associated with behaviours of concern
- Gathering and analysing behavioural data to inform assessment, intervention planning, and ongoing review
- Creating practical and innovative resources tailored to each person’s needs
- Supporting the implementation and ongoing review of behaviour support and safety plans
- Coaching kaimahi, caregivers, and whānau to confidently apply Positive Behaviour Support strategies
- Observing practice and providing constructive feedback and guidance
- Monitoring progress and adapting interventions in response to changing needs
- Working directly with disabled people and their support networks to ensure plans are meaningful and respectful
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary professionals and service delivery teams
- Advocating for the rights, choices, and support needs of the people we support
- Maintaining accurate, timely, and high-quality documentation
- Contributing to consistent practice across geographically dispersed services
- Supporting culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and person-centred practice
You will bring lived or professional experience within disability service delivery or an operational environment, preferably within the health, disability, education, or community services sectors.
A background in psychology, education, social work, health, human services, or a related field would be highly regarded.
You will also bring:
- Experience working alongside disabled people, particularly those with behaviours of concern or complex support needs
- Knowledge of Positive Behaviour Support principles and person-centred practice
- Experience completing or contributing to functional behaviour assessments
- The ability to identify the causes and functions of behaviours of concern
- Experience developing and implementing evidence-based behaviour support strategies
- The creativity and motivation to develop individualised tools and practical resources
- Experience coaching, training, or supporting kaimahi, caregivers, and whānau
- Strong data collection, analysis, and progress-monitoring capability
- The ability to make informed, evidence-based decisions
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- The ability to explain complex behavioural concepts in a clear and accessible way
- Excellent relationship-building and collaborative skills
- Empathy, patience, and emotional intelligence
- Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving capability
- The ability to adapt strategies as a person’s needs and circumstances change
- Experience advocating for people’s rights and access to appropriate services
- An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the ability to embed its principles within everyday practice
- Respect for cultural diversity and a commitment to culturally responsive support
- The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a geographically dispersed team
- A solutions-focused and growth-oriented mindset
- Resilience and confidence working through unexpected or challenging situations
- Sound professional judgement, integrity, and the ability to self-manage
- A full New Zealand Driver Licence
- A formal Positive Behaviour Support qualification, BILD PBS qualification, or equivalent training would be advantageous. Support may be available for the successful applicant to continue developing their Positive Behaviour Support capability.
- The successful applicant must be willing and able to complete Police vetting, VCA checks, and any other relevant pre-employment requirements.
