Job summary

Opal Kiwi Packaging in Christchurch, South Island, is seeking a Maintenance Fitter for a full-time role on Monday to Friday, 5:00pm – 1:00am. You will maintain and repair a range of manufacturing equipment to keep our plant running reliably and safely.

Reporting to the Maintenance Team Leader, you will troubleshoot faults, dismantle and reassemble pumps and conveyors, assist with upgrades, and collaborate with electricians and operators.

Qualifications

• A Level 4 Trade Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Previous experience as a Maintenance Fitter in manufacturing or industrial settings is preferred.
• Strong attention to detail with a focus on safety and quality.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on a wide range of manufacturing equipment.
• Troubleshoot mechanical faults and breakdowns in a timely and efficient manner.
• Dismantle, repair, and reassemble pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, pneumatic systems and other plant machinery.
• Carry out fabrication and welding tasks (basic MIG/TIG preferred).
• Provide mechanical support for corrugating and converting machines.
• Work alongside electricians, fitters and operating staff to diagnose issues and implement solutions.
• Install new equipment and assist with machine upgrades or factory modifications.
• Complete assigned work orders, including planned and preventative maintenance.

Opal Kiwi Packaging is seeking an energetic and proactive Maintenance Fitter to join our Christchurch team. This is a full-time position working Monday to Friday, 5:00pm - 1:00am.

This is a hands-on role where you will be responsible for maintaining, fault-finding, and repairing machinery to optimise equipment reliability and performance. You will provide mechanical support to ensure our plant operates efficiently at all times.

About the Role

About You

• Communicate effectively and work well as part of a team
• Apply a strong understanding of mechanical concepts
• Diagnose and solve problems methodically and accurately, particularly under pressure
• Work independently and use initiative when required
• Be versatile, flexible, responsible, and logical in your approach

Work regular overtime when required

Skills and Experience Required

• A Level 4 Trade Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
• Previous experience as a Maintenance Fitter, preferably in a medium to heavy manufacturing or industrial setting (all ages & experience encouraged to apply)
• Excellent attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality and safety
• Strong understanding of mechanical systems, pneumatics, and hydraulics
• Ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics
• Good communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Experience with boiler and steam systems (advantageous but not essential)
• A good level of physical fitness
