Job summary

Westpac in New Zealand is seeking a Lead Engineer to drive design and delivery of payment systems. You will mentor engineers, set coding and DevOps standards, and align technical work with strategic goals. The role bridges technology leadership and squads to deliver high-quality, scalable solutions.

You will oversee architectural direction, foster modern development practices, and lead continuous improvement initiatives across teams in an agile environment.

Qualifications

• At least 8 years of professional experience in app development with 3+ years in a leadership role.
• Experience with Java-based full stack development and microservices architecture.
• Experience with a wide range of DevOps tools including Playwright, Docker, OpenShift, Chef, Jenkins, Dynatrace and Splunk.
• IBM Mainframe knowledge would be an advantage - COBOL, CICS, DB2, MQ.
• Proven track record in designing and implementing systems architecture.
• Solid understanding of Quality Engineering standards and automation frameworks.
• Experience mentoring and leading a team of developers.
• Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills.
• Experience in Agile environments and cross-functional collaboration.
• A customer-focused mindset and delivery of high-quality software.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering teams to develop features, integrations, configuration and delivery.
• Define coding, quality and DevOps practices and drive tech modernization.
• Mentor engineers to raise technical capabilities across multiple technologies.
• Collaborate with product and engineering leadership to align with roadmaps.
• Guide technical decisions and own engineering roadmaps.
