Job description

Junior Service Technician – No Experience Required - As seen on Trade Me.

Finished school? Not keen on university? Rather get paid to learn practical skills than spend your days behind a desk?

Northland Farm Services is looking for a motivated, mechanically minded Junior Service Technician to join our Whangārei team.

We're not looking for someone who knows everything. We're looking for someone with a good attitude, a willingness to learn, and an interest in how things work.

If you've grown up tinkering with motorbikes, fixing machinery, helping out on the farm, or pulling things apart just to see how they work, this could be the start of a pretty decent career.

About the role

You'll work alongside our experienced Service Technicians, learning the skills needed to install, service, maintain and repair essential equipment used by Northland farmers, growers and rural businesses.

Based out of our Whangārei workshop, you'll get to travel throughout Northland, from Cape Reinga to Kaukapakapa, working on a wide variety of jobs.

Your day-to-day will include:

  • Assisting with servicing, repairs and installation of milking machinery, water pumps, irrigation and effluent systems
  • Learning how to diagnose mechanical faults and troubleshoot equipment breakdowns
  • Working on farms, orchards, rural properties and in our workshop
  • Learning to use tools, machinery and modern agricultural technology
  • Assisting experienced technicians with breakdowns and maintenance
  • Completing basic job documentation using our job management software
  • Developing customer service and communication skills

No two days are the same, and you certainly won't be stuck behind a desk.

Who we're looking for

You don't need qualifications or previous industry experience. We'll teach you what you need to know. What matters most is your attitude. Ideally, you'll be someone who:

  • Has recently finished school or is looking to start a career in the trades
  • Is mechanically minded and enjoys practical, hands‑on work
  • Is reliable, punctual and willing to put in the effort
  • Has a genuine interest in learning new skills
  • Can follow instructions, use common sense and work safely
  • Enjoys working outdoors and doesn't mind getting dirty
  • Can work well with others and has a good sense of humour
  • Holds a driver's licence
  • Can meet our workplace drug and alcohol safety requirements
Bonus points if you have:
  • A farming or rural background
  • Experience working with engines, motorbikes, machinery or tools
  • Basic welding or mechanical knowledge
  • An interest in engineering, electrical work, plumbing or agricultural technology

None of these extras are essential. A willingness to learn goes a long way.

What's in it for you?

We're offering more than just a job. We're offering the opportunity to build practical skills and develop a long‑term career in an essential industry.

  • Earn while you learn – Full‑time paid employment with hands‑on training
  • Learn from experienced technicians – Work alongside people who know their stuff
  • Career development – Opportunities to grow your technical skills and take on more responsibility
  • Variety – Work across agricultural, horticultural, rural and commercial environments
  • Competitive remuneration – Pay, perks and conditions appropriate to your skills and experience
  • Supportive team – A down‑to‑earth crew who will back you while you learn
  • Modern technology – Gain experience with the equipment and systems keeping Northland's primary industries running

As your skills and experience develop, the role will also include participation in rostered breakdown call‑outs over the weekends.

About Northland Farm Services

Our team is practical, hardworking and down‑to‑earth. We take our work seriously, but ourselves? Not so much.

Ready to get started?

If you're the sort of person who can't walk past a broken machine without wanting to figure out how it works, we'd love to hear from you.

You don't need an impressive CV or years of experience. Just tell us a bit about yourself, what interests you, and why you'd like to join the team.
