Job summary

Freyberg High School in New Zealand seeks a permanent, full-time Teacher of Engineering to deliver engaging programmes starting Term 1, 2027. You will foster a practical learning environment that helps students design, investigate and create, applying engineering concepts to real-world challenges.

Freyberg High School is seeking a permanent, full-time dedicated Teacher of Engineering to join our team and deliver engaging, high-quality programmes commencing Term 1, 2027.

As a Teacher of Engineering, you will create a positive, practical and engaging learning environment that supports the diverse learning needs of all students.You will encourage students to design, investigate, problem-solve and create, helping them develop the confidence and skills to apply engineering concepts to real-world challenges.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging Engineering and Technology programmes.
  • Plan and implement practical, project-based learning experiences using varied and effective pedagogies.
  • Support students to develop skills in design, problem-solving, innovation and engineering practice.
  • Assess and monitor student progress, maintaining accurate records and providing constructive feedback.
  • Deliver programmes aligned with curriculum expectations and relevant NCEA achievement standards.
  • Use ICT and digital technologies, including Office 365 and relevant engineering/design software, to support teaching and learning.
  • Maintain effective classroom and workshop management, including a strong focus on health and safety.
  • Ensure students understand and follow appropriate workshop, equipment and machinery safety procedures.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, professional development and curriculum development.
  • Undertake the Kaiārahi role, mentoring a small group of students and supporting their academic pathways.
  • Contribute positively to wider school life, including extracurricular activities and opportunities that promote student engagement in STEM.

You will bring

  • A recognised teaching qualification and current NZ teacher registration.
  • Strong curriculum knowledge and effective teaching practice in Engineering and/or Technology.
  • Practical experience and confidence working in an engineering, technology or workshop environment.
  • The ability to develop engaging, hands-on learning experiences for students.
  • Confidence using digital technologies and relevant design or engineering tools to enhance learning.
  • A strong commitment to workshop health and safety.
  • Excellent organisational, communication and classroom management skills.
  • The ability to build positive and respectful relationships with students, staff and whānau.
  • A commitment to ongoing professional learning and development.
  • Enthusiasm for encouraging students to explore STEM pathways, trades, engineering and further study.
